This course is designed for people seeking to attain an Initial Teacher Education qualification in order to register as a teacher in Australia and any other countries that recognise an Australian teaching qualification. Students in this course will hold a degree in another discipline that contains some content relevant to the major chosen. Students will develop advanced critical skills, knowledge and understanding concerning best practice in education and in meeting the needs of 21st century learners. Graduates from this course will be well-placed to enter leadership pathways in their teaching careers. Most units in this course will be offered fully online, in order to provide more flexible access. Students will have four opportunities to engage in professional practice in schools, culminating in a final professional placement of 5 continuous weeks.

The Master of Teaching (Primary Education) will be chosen by those who wish to teach in Years 1 - 6 in Primary Schools, and will provide a foundation for teaching across the primary curriculum. Students entering this course will hold a degree in a discipline that contains content relevant to the Australian Curriculum in the primary years. Students will complete professional experience placements in a range of schools and across a range of year levels and will benefit from the School of Educations’ specialisation in STEM subjects.

At the completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. draw from theory and research to apply knowledge of the needs of students from diverse backgrounds and across the full range of abilities to enhance learning
  2. apply high-level discipline knowledge, principles and concepts associated with effective teaching; demonstrate personal literacy and numeracy competencies to the required accreditation standard
  3. assess student learning and analyse diverse sources of data to support valid judgements of student learning
  4. plan and deliver effective teaching and learning experiences with demonstrated impact
  5. use technologies appropriately for learning and teaching
  6. engage in professional learning and demonstrate capacity for leadership
  7. engage in critical and reflective practice based on local, national and international research
  8. create and manage positive learning environments for all students, including those from diverse cultural backgrounds
  9. communicate professionally and engage collaboratively with colleagues, parent/carers, and the community.

Graduates of this course will have the skills, knowledge and experience required to teach in primary schools. Additional careers include education administrator or policy development officer.

This course is currently undergoing national accreditation and it is expected that this will be finalised early in 2017.

Academic entrance requirements:

To be eligible for entry into the Master of Teaching (Primary Education) applicants need to have completed a Bachelor degree or its equivalent from a recognised tertiary institution with studies equivalent to at least one year FTE in an area relevant to one or more learning areas of the primary curriculum.

Non-academic entrance requirements:

Applicants will also be required to engage in testing of non-academic attributes in order to assess their suitability to teaching. Students will be responsible for meeting any costs associated with this assessment process.

Professional work experience:

Entry to this course will not be possible through Professional Experience only: this is consistent with current practice for courses in the School of Education.

English Language Proficiency Requirements:

Applicants need to meet Curtin’s English Language requirement as all courses are taught in English. If your education courses were not solely in English, as per the International Handbook of Universities or the World Higher Education database, please attach a scanned original copy of English Proficiency Test results.

Admission requires an overall International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic) (or equivalent test) score of 7.5, with no score below 7 in any of the four skill areas and a score of no less than 8 in speaking and listening.

Working with Children Clearances and Certifications

A current Working with Children clearance (as required in the state or country of residence) is compulsory.

Due to the specialist nature of the teaching profession, and the professional experience placements within this course, all successful applicants will be required to have a current Working with Children clearance and any other relevant State requirements before engaging in any professional placement. If students have any doubt about their eligibility to acquire these clearances they should contact the local Teacher Registration Authority.

Professional Experience Placements

All placements must be in a registered school and where the language of instruction is Australian Standard English. All students are required to successfully complete compulsory professional experience placements in schools as part of designated units throughout the course.

Placements are undertaken on a full-time basis for the number of days shown in a continuous block and students need to plan carefully to ensure they are able to meet this commitment. The total number of days of professional experience in the course will satisfy all states' requirements for teacher registration. No more than 25% of professional experience days may be undertaken in schools outside Australia. Therefore, students will only be able to complete one 3 week placement outside Australia and will be required to complete all other placements within Australia.

None of the four professional experience placements can be broken or split into shorter periods.

Note: The first year of the course includes two professional experience units that require school placements of 10 consecutive days and 15 consecutive days respectively. These two units are undertaken in the same calendar year in the same school. The third year professional experience unit contains a block placement of 15 consecutive days in a different school context and the fourth year has a 25 consecutive days in a third school.

Students must be able to complete placements in more than one school over the duration of the course. Students' placements should be in a variety of year levels from junior to upper primary.

In those circumstances where the student is having difficulty securing a placement, Curtin University staff will assist and will seek input from the student to identify possibilities before making direct contact with the school. Students having difficulty should contact Curtin in sufficient time to ensure that they are not disadvantaged due to their personal inability to identify a site for professional experience.

Further information about the professional experience placement requirements will be provided to students who have been admitted to the degree. Students who may seek to vary any of the stated conditions and requirements in the various professional experience unit handbooks must contact the relevant Unit Co-ordinator prior to enrolling in the unit.

The final placement of 25 consecutive days is part of the final unit in the degree and cannot be undertaken until all other units and theoretical components have been successfully completed. Clearance will be given to commence the final professional experience placement pending results of final units.

Students should check for prerequisites before enrolling in any units. Each of the Professional Experience units must be completed in order and there are pre-requisites for these units. For example, Professional Experience 1 and 2 are both pre-requisites for Professional Experience 3.

The standard full-time study load is two units per study period.

To qualify for the Master of Teaching (Primary Education), students must successfully complete all core units. There are 16 units comprised of:

  • coursework units
  • units requiring professional experience block placements in school settings, including a final placement of 25 consecutive days

Students are also required to provide evidence of successful completion of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education students (LANTITE). The test is managed by ACER and details of the test (for example, sample questions, the Test Window dates, and registration) can be found at: https://teacheredtest.acer.edu.au/. Students are responsible for meeting the costs associated with taking these tests, which are a national requirement applicable to all teaching graduates.

Students must successfully complete all required units in the degree and the LANTITE prior to enrolling in the final professional experience unit.

Please note: Credit is rarely given on the basis of professional experience only in Initial Teacher Education courses as graduates must meet registration requirements set by the accrediting bodies in each state/territory.

Applications for Credit for Recognised Learning (CRL) are assessed on a case by case basis according to Curtin University policies which is available at http://policies.curtin.edu.au/local/docs/policy/Credit_for_Recognised_Learning_Manual.pdf.

Students must be admitted in an award course of study before lodging their completed CRL application, along with all necessary documentation for a formal assessment.
