The Curtin University Professional Writing and Publishing degree prepares students for writing careers in the private, public and creative sectors through the study and practice of a range of different writing forms, including feature articles, speeches, reports, discussion papers, travel writing, history, personal essays, memoir, website copywriting, social media writing, promotional writing, creative non-fiction, and media releases. Historical fiction is one of the oldest genres of the literary novel, but the past is also used in many different ways in popular mass-market fiction such as romance and fantasy. This unit explores the use of history in narrative forms, including medieval literature, the rise of the novel in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and the explosion of popular genre fiction in the twentieth century. It looks at how the genre became &quot;feminised&quot; and the role of the novelist Georgette Heyer in creating a new subgenre of historical romance. It explores how the past, from the ancient world to Australian history, has been fictionalised. Yet the twenty-first century historical novel is not merely entertaining; it can create debates and challenge public perceptions of the past in unsettling ways. Students will also consider how Australian authors have used historical fiction to retell or offer alternative narratives about the nation. By the end of this unit, students will understand how the past informs literary and popular fiction, and why historical fiction can sometimes be considered a form of historiographical interpretation, especially in novels relating to the Second World War and the Holocaust.

Historical Fiction and a Passion for the Past

Subject formerly titled &quot;Australian History in a Global Context&quot;.In this subject you will learn about the history of Australia from the deepest time to the present, gaining particular insight into Tasmania&#39;s past as well as an understanding of a wider global context. The subject begins with the formation and peopling of the continent and extends into modern history to cover the first arrivals of Europeans; the resistance and genocide of First Nations peoples; and the creation of a modern democratic nation shaped by war, immigration, rights movements, and climate change. You will gain access to learning materials created by leading experts in the field to develop an in-depth knowledge of Australian history and why it matters today. More broadly, this subject will help you improve your communication of information and ideas through a range of assessment tasks.

Australia's History

This subject reviews what archaeology has discovered about the world&#39;s great civilisations. We investigate how civilisations developed and the implications of this knowledge for our own survival. We embark on a survey of the variety of complex human societies that have arisen in the last 6,000 years: in Egypt and the Middle East, the Mediterranean and Western Europe, China, South and Southeast Asia, Mesoamerica and South America. Lectures in this subject are pre-recorded and available on the LMS. Tutorials require live attendance by all students.

Unearth ancient history. You’ll explore the powerful civilisations of ancient Egypt, China, South America, and others. Trace the rise and fall of ancient cultures, thinking about how their stories relate to today’s society.

In this subject you will read and interpret ancient Greek and Roman mythology, and be introduced to theoretical approaches to interpreting these myths. You will learn about Greek and Roman creation myths, and tales involving the Olympian gods, heroes and heroines, including Heracles, Jason, Perseus, Odysseus, Medea, Ariadne,  Romulus and Lucretia. As you work your way through these myths, you will encounter thematic elements of classical mythology such as the figure of the monster, the sexual conduct of gods and mortals, conception and birth, ethnic identities, gender roles, the foundation of cities, death, and images of the underworld, and life after death.This is a level 2 subject. Classical Mythology

Every week students will be introduced to a number of myths from ancient Greece, Rome, the ancient Near East (including Egypt), and some myths from the Aboriginal traditions. You will study the earliest creation myths, explore the stories of gods and goddesses, heroes and monsters, in ancient literature and art. The myths, studied in translation, will be analysed in terms of their cultural context, the genre in which they belong, their typology and as the semester progresses through certain theoretical perspectives.

Reveal how the politics and cultural life of ancient civilisations are reflected in their mythology. Meet figures from Greek, Roman and Near-Eastern mythology. Study Egyptian and biblical texts. Look for examples of myths in literature and art.

The Second World War in Europe demonstrated an unprecedented capacity to mobilise huge numbers of people and to wreak massive damage in the cause of ‘military necessity’. The warring regimes offered inspiring visions of the future in efforts to engage whole populations in military and political offensives. In this subject we study the strategies employed in the conflict, the effects on occupied peoples, including both collaboration and resistance, and the increasing desperation of the final stages.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. The Second World War in Europe

The twenty-first century is already being called the Asian Century. What were the countries and peoples we call Asia like 100 years ago, at the start of the twentieth century? How did they change across the century? And how did this process influence their current prosperity and sense of national identity? The subject will survey the major social, political and cultural changes of the past 100 years of so, including European colonisation, the impact of the expansion of Japan and the Second World War, the rise of Asian nationalisms and the wars of independence, consolidation of national political regimes, economic development and modernisation, the rapid recent rise of China and India.This is a level 2 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

The Making of Modern Asia

This subject explores the history of the resistance to colonisation by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia, with a focus on Melbourne and Victoria, from 1770 to the present day. You will be asked to critically consider the actions of the invaders and reflect on how the lives of First Nations peoples were impacted by invasion.  Case studies include frontier wars, missions, the Stolen Generations, exemption policies, war service, sport, interwar activism, land rights and reconciliation. You will explore theoretical frameworks and specific examples to help understand how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have resisted the forces of colonisation. The subject will also ask students to reflect on their own relationship to histories of colonisation, and to think about how the history of the colonisation of Australia has been remembered and forgotten. You will also examine the relationship between the discipline of history and colonialism, including the problems created when knowledge is constructed using the colonial archive. This is a level 3 subject. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Histories Of Indigenous Resistance

This subject consists of a comparative history of the Pacific War, considering Japanese, Australian and American perspectives and the war in its political, social, cultural and military aspects. Topics include the role of the Japanese emperor, the debate over the Pearl Harbor attack, the experience of Australian prisoners-of-war, Japanese wartime civilian experience, the internment of Japanese civilians in Australia and the USA, the importance to all sides of concepts of race, the naval war and kamikaze pilots.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Soldiers and Civilians: War in the Pacific 1941-1945

England under the Tudors was a period of treachery, political intrigue and religious conflict—the effect of which transformed the face of Europe and rebounded through history. Under the reigns of Henry VIII and his daughters, Mary I and Elizabeth I, the Reformation sundered the religious and political unity of Europe, the feudal king was supplanted by a &#39;divine&#39; monarch, and England rose as a world power. England’s security in the same period was shaped by complex international relations, including notable contests with Scotland, France and Spain, the long reach of the Holy Roman Emperor, and the enduring strategic and religious influence of the Pope. Though literature and the arts flourished at home in the Tudor age, giving rise to the works of Shakespeare, Spenser, Donne and Holbein, it was also a period of intense social conflict in which ‘witches’ were hanged and religious dissidents were burned at the stake. In this subject students explore the allies, enemies and impacts of the Tudor monarchs to understand the extraordinary experiences of the English Renaissance.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online.
