This subject invites students to consider the design, structure, functionality and application of games and gaming. The subject presents various ways to consider game elements including as virtual environments, toys, narrative engines, sets of algorithmic rules, simulations. There is a primary focus on digitally mediated games, especially those that leverage three dimensional modelling and rendering. Students will undertake critical analysis of existing games, as well as explore the potential for game creation through the design and conceptualisation of their own games.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. Take the first step from gamer to game designer. Evaluate the look and structure of games, and develop your own concepts. Study limitations of tech through time, and make connections between games of today, and non-digitised games of yesteryear.

This subject introduces the topic of game design and production. Students will work in teams to design and develop a prototype of their design using an agile development methodology. During the development process students will document aspects of the game&#39;s implementation. Students will prepare their game prototype for an online release and will pitch their concept of the final product as if pitching to a platform holder or publisher. Students will learn skills that are essential for the game designer, such as: 3D modelling, rapid prototyping tools, level editing tools, and scripting.Topics that will be covered include: concept development; world, character, and story design; basic user interface design; testing, quality assurance, and platform certification; product storefront creation and promotion; and intellectual property, copyright, entrepreneurship, and funding.Completing this subject will provide you with the opportunity to obtain the Unity Certified Associate: Programmer professional industry certification via completion of a certification exam.

Games (whether they be video games, console games, computer games, mobile games, or web games) differ from other media as they elevate the viewer to the level of a participant. Games are an ever-growing cultural phenomenon which has increasing relevance to people&#39;s day-to-day lives and well as significant economic importance.In this subject, students will be exposed to the basics of game development technology and game design, via an intensive process learning practical skills for developing games and the application of these in the development of their own small game.While games are typically &quot;fun&quot;, they are also increasingly being developed for non-entertainment uses, through so-called serious gaming and by the use of gamification. Supplementing the practical component, this subject will introduce such games as they are used to make social statements and to drive social change; for education and training; for rehabilitation and health; for research; and for art&#39;s sake alone. This subject will also examine controversial game content, the effects of game playing, and various ethical concerns.This subject will feature guest speakers who will provide unique personal insights into the workings of the games industry and advice on how to best prepare for employment within it. Completing this subject will provide you with the opportunity to obtain the Unity Certified User: Programmer professional industry certification via completion of a certification exam.

Sport, games, and play are a part of everyday life. Formal or informal, solitary or shared, physical or virtual, realistic or fantastical, organised or spontaneous, games are a means of escaping the ‘real’ world or exploring it in new ways. Our shared values can be demonstrated through play, either by celebrating those we deem to be ‘good sports’ or shaming those who don’t play ‘in the spirit of the game’. But how are these norms of ‘fair play’ shaped, by whom, and how can they change over time? How can urban sports such as skateboarding and parkour be seen as ‘subversive’ and framed as a public menace, and yet offer opportunities for personal expression and communal belonging? How are video games shaping new understandings of both fun and competitive interactions, and how are e-sports influencing the future of play?Meanwhile, more ‘traditional’ forms of sport are undoubtedly among the most influential in Australian society. No less than three Australian Test cricket captains and tennis players have been recognised as Australian of the Year. Prime Ministers and other political leaders desperately promote their team affiliations to make themselves relatable, and Victoria has not one, but two public holidays dedicated solely to sporting events. But why is this the case? Why does sport seem to possess such an enormous influence in Australian society? Sport can unite us and foster community-building, but it can also divide us through forms of exclusion based on race, gender, sexuality, faith, age, and class. In short, sport may claim to be ‘fair’ while in reality proving ‘foul’. In this subject, we address debates around sports and games and explore how forms of play can create welcoming social spaces.This is an online, entirely asynchronous subject, meaning there are no live lectures or tutorials. Instead students can work through the content on their own schedules (while, of course, keeping in mind the assessment deadlines).In 2025 this subject will commence on January 6 and end around February 21. However, it is possible to submit the final assessment prior to the deadline and complete the subject earlier.

This subject was previously known as Online Games and Play.This subject explores the broader spaces and nature of play online, and how it relates to the development of digital forms of gaming. The nature of immersion, and its relationship to interactivity, is examined, investigating how narrative is constructed and communicated through game play. The subject provides critical perspectives on the notion of gamification and the growing area of research centred around videogame streamers and the labour ecosystem of eSports. It examines a series of gaming tropes and themes, games as texts, and the ways that games enter social frameworks to convey, refract, engage with, and resist power structures. Games User Experience and  Interface Design

This subject focuses on the theories, techniques and tools for designing, constructing and producing interactive 3D visualisation systems including computer games, interactive modelling software, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality software. Besides focusing on the theories, techniques and tools, the unit will cover additional topics such as budgeting, design documentation, evaluation, group dynamics, project management, team roles and responsibilities. Virtual Realities and Games Software Production

This unit aims to give students a general background of virtual realities (augmented, mixed and virtual) and game software design to create something fun and entertaining. It addresses elements and issues of design concepts, creation and plays in computer, video and VR games. Topics include character design, creative play, core mechanics, design documentation, design process environment, game-balancing, player motivation, user interfaces, and virtual realities. Virtual Realities and Games Software Design

The &#39;medieval&#39; is everywhere in our &#39;modern&#39; age, both in culture and in our institutions. The University and the Parliament are medieval institutional inventions, for example. Our popular culture is imbued with myths bequeathed by the Middle Ages, from Robin Hood to Jedi Knights. And yet, the term &#39;medieval&#39; is hurled as an insult to anyone thought to be backwards or ignorant. Following Tarantino, brutal punishment can be defined as getting medieval. This unit will look at both the real Middle Ages, as a historical period, as well as its representations in our own culture. In particular, we will look at the political history of Latin Christendom, in order to understand the rise of kingdoms and the papacy during the Middle Ages. Simultaneously, students will encounter medievalism in our own time. We will match our discussion of the &#39;real&#39; Middle Ages with awareness of the &#39;fantasy&#39; Middle Ages in which our imaginations so often reside.
