Graduates in the Master of Ancient History (OUA) will have specialised knowledge in this discipline and skills for research and further learning. In this course, you will have the opportunity to gain advanced and integrated understanding of a complex body of knowledge in a range of relevant disciplines. The study of the past is constantly evolving and this unit sets out to introduce students to the changing nature of the study of antiquity and the on-going significance of the past in the modern world. This unit also introduces students to the study of primary sources, or evidence from Greek and Roman world, and the evaluation of how history is written through an analysis of a specific historical area. The first section of the unit is focused on the study of ancient sources - what is our evidence and how did authors millennia ago write about major world events - pandemics, war, politics, and so on that continue to be a focus for us today. This section of the unit will give you a thorough understanding of the issues around the use of evidence in Ancient History.The second section of the unit focuses on the writing of ancient history in the modern world. You will study a developing area of recent research and critically evaluate how this research is created, its limitations and its strengths, and its significance for those living in the modern world.The third section introduces students to recent research on the failure of the Roman Republic in the second century BCE with a view to better understanding how a political system can simply cease to function and to understand the relevance of this historical phenomenon for the 21st century.

Explore how universities in today’s modern world research and make meaning of the past. You’ll review evidence of major events in Greek and Roman history. And with a critical eye, you’ll evaluate ancient sources against current principles and processes.

Students will undertake extended research on a topic arising from an AHIX unit which they have previously completed, and produce a research project which will be presented orally and as a written paper (2500 words). In preparation for the larger research project students will submit an annotated bibliography and research plan together with a review of the project. Students must contact the unit convenor by the first week of the session to obtain approval for their topic.

Capstone in Ancient History and Archaeology

This unit provides students with fundamental knowledge of select ancient historical sources and a variety of approaches to the interpretation of these sources in modern scholarship. Students will study a set of ancient historical readings and analyse those texts and the methods used to interpret them offered by current scholarship. They will develop an independent project from these readings that offers historical and historiographical insights.

Ancient Historiographical and Historical Studies: Foundation

Understanding ancient languages is fundamental to our understanding of ancient cultures. In this unit students will undertake studies in an ancient language relevant to their field of interest. The unit provides students with fundamental introductory knowledge and understanding of ancient language - its phonetic structure, grammar, and vocabulary. Students will learn to integrate the knowledge of the grammar and vocabulary in reading and/or writing texts in the ancient language at the appropriate level, and explore the significance of the ancient language for the study of relevant ancient cultures.

Ancient Language Studies: Foundation in Ancient Language

Students will undertake studies in ancient history and/or archaeology relevant to their field of interest. Through extended research on a topic of their choice they will write a research question, design a research project and complete a short research paper. Students must choose a supervisor and research area from the list of available staff and staff specializations provided on iLearn, and contact the unit convenor by the first week of the session to obtain approval for the topic and choice of supervisor.

Archaeological and Historical Studies: Foundation in Archaeology or History

This subject was previously known as VIS18 Historical Issues in Art and Design.
This subject provides students with an introduction to some of the key ideas and events in the history of art and design. It is intended as a basic introduction to the history of ideas and the effects such ideas have had on the recent evolution of art and design. While this unit has a Euro-centric bias, ideas from other cultural histories are introduced. Students are taught the visual literacy and analysis needed to be able to understand historical and contemporary art and design.

Since ancient times, magic and religion have shared a common belief in the supernatural and other-worldly encounters; yet their histories tell a story of acrimony and dissent.This unit investigates how magic and the supernatural have been accepted, understood and practised in a range of historical and social contexts.You will explore such themes as natural, ritual and demonic magic, necromancy, spirits, mediums and séances, fictional wizards and enchantment.Underpinning the study will be an examination of the nature and use of magic and its relation to religion, religious ideologies, science and entertainment.

Magic and the Supernatural in History and Culture

In 1215 CE, a Mongol army led by Genghis Khan conquered the Chinese city of Zongdhu (present-day Beijing), creating the basis for the largest contiguous land empire in human history. That same year, leaders of the Latin Church met for the Fourth Lateran Council in Rome at the other end of Eurasia, establishing western European Christian doctrine for the next three centuries. These civilizations soon came into contact as the Mongol Empire enabled commerce and cultural exchange between east and west Eurasia. This unit explores how the increasingly complex network of connections that linked Europe and the wider world between the High Middle Ages and the eve of the modern era helped to create the particular society and culture that we today frequently refer to as “the West.” We focus on the historical contingency of this creation and the ways in which both European and non-European influences and factors forged the idea of the West. From medieval encounters between Christianity and Islam to eighteenth-century encounters between Pacific Islanders and Europeans, from the thirteenth-century Eurasian economic world system to the truly global economy that emerged after 1500, from the horseback empire of the Mongols to the martime empires built by European states, we explore the transformation of the premodern world. The unit considers these processes from both European and non-European perspectives.

Explore a crucial period of premodern history. Analyse the religious, political, economic, and cultural events that contributed to the creation of Western society. Dive more deeply into an aspect of this era by penning a research-based essay. 

Forging the West: A World History of Europe, 1215-1788

Every week students will be introduced to a number of myths from ancient Greece, Rome, the ancient Near East (including Egypt), and some myths from the Aboriginal traditions. You will study the earliest creation myths, explore the stories of gods and goddesses, heroes and monsters, in ancient literature and art. The myths, studied in translation, will be analysed in terms of their cultural context, the genre in which they belong, their typology and as the semester progresses through certain theoretical perspectives.

Reveal how the politics and cultural life of ancient civilisations are reflected in their mythology. Meet figures from Greek, Roman and Near-Eastern mythology. Study Egyptian and biblical texts. Look for examples of myths in literature and art.

How and why did people start to compose stories about the past? Why are some of these stories referred to as ‘history,’ when others are classified as ‘myth’ or ‘legend’?  How are history and the nation connected? The history we study at school and university is the product of a particular western European tradition, but there are different ways of knowing about the past, and complex reasons why some stories survive over centuries. The discipline of history itself has also changed over time.In this subject you will explore how diverse peoples have constructed stories about their pasts, and how these stories have made an impact over time. You’ll hear from experts in the disciplines of History, Classics, and Archaeology who share an interest in the past but who use different types of evidence and ask different questions of that evidence. Our examination will range from the myths of Classical Greece and Rome; through the ancient texts, oral traditions and archaeology of South Asia, Early Medieval Britain and the Viking world; to uses of the past in the settler colonial worlds of America and Australia from the 19th century, in twentieth-century Nazi Germany, and in contemporary South Asia.You will gain expertise in using a variety of historical sources including written stories, documents, objects, and visual materials such as paintings and film. You will have the opportunity to reflect on what it really means to study &#39;history’ and why history continues to play both an important and controversial role in politics, culture and in our understandings of ourselves.This is a level 1 subject.
