Transitioning into your new career as a graduate teacher is exciting and there are many ways this course prepares you for the reality of life as an educator. You will learn about teachers’ work and culture; the ethical, legal and safety issues that arise when working in this field. Because many graduate teachers start their careers as casuals, this subject will cover issues and strategies central to effective casual teaching. You will gain skills in communicating, relating to and reporting to parents and carers in order to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. You will learn strategies for managing challenging behaviour and also develop a practice of critical reflection. This subject will help you develop your professional portfolio and guide you through the process of accreditation (including annotation of evidence required for ongoing accreditation throughout your career).

Teaching Development 4: The Graduate Teacher

This subject includes a basic overview of approaches, methods, and techniques used in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). It focuses on developing successful classroom practices that address the learning needs and interests of culturally diverse and language minority students. Students in this subject will have the opportunity to apply what has been discussed in the workshops to hands-on teaching practices and detailed lesson planning.

Gain an overview of the approaches and methods used in teaching English to non-native speakers. Develop classroom techniques that address the needs of culturally diverse students to improve your teaching practices and detailed lesson planning.

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Methodologies

Students are introduced to the International Baccalaureate program, both as a philosophy and framework for learning and teaching. Students examine the essential elements of the International Baccalaureate model including the International Baccalaureate mission statement. Students critique successful teaching practices within these programs. Students focus on developing understandings of international education, values education, and the centrality of the Learner Profile to an International Baccalaureate education as well as exploring theoretical implications of international mindedness.

Introduction to International Baccalaureate Education

This subject will support you to gain the theoretical understandings, skills and methodologies to provide learning and teaching experiences within the Languages domain. You will be required to develop a comprehensive and coherent base of theoretical understandings upon which to base future learning and teaching experiences, which will suit the diverse contexts in which Languages teaching may occur. You will begin to explore and apply to practice contemporary language teaching theories, methodologies, principles and practices as expressed in the ACARA Curriculum: Languages. Current issues in Language teaching will be critiqued to develop the learners professional understanding of being a Language educator. This is the first of two sequential language (Languages / TESOL) teaching methodology units for Master of Teaching students.

Languages Teaching Methodologies

This subject will provide you with the opportunity to apply theories of teaching and learning in healthcare settings. Your knowledge and skills will be further developed through examining practical issues related to assessing learners as well as the provision of feedback to enhance performance. Your teaching knowledge and skills will be evidenced through lesson planning, the development of a teaching portfolio, and reflection on practice.

Applied Learning and Teaching for Health Professionals

You will explore the theoretical foundations and practical applications of simulation-based education in healthcare settings. You will focus on designing, implementing and evaluating simulations that enhance practice and promote patient safety. You will develop the skills to create engaging simulations using diverse modalities that align with standards of best practice in simulation. Emphasis is placed on simulation standards that promote best practice with the aim to ensure simulations contribute meaningfully to the development of critical thinking, reflective practice and professional competencies.

Simulation in Health Teaching

In this subject, you will explore the main adult learning theories and how they can inform your teaching and learning in healthcare settings. You will evaluate the effectiveness of various instructional methods, tools and technology for diverse healthcare contexts and audiences. You also will have the opportunity to analyse the principles and strategies for evaluating teaching and examine best practices for providing feedback on teaching and learning.

Learning and Teaching in Healthcare Settings

This course is an introduction to the field of Positive Education exploring topics related to positive thinking, values, character strengths, resilience, mindfulness and the concept of social and emotional learning programs. It is designed for leaders in schools who wish to evaluate and strengthen established programs or implement new ones. The unit will familiarise students with the fields of Positive Education and Positive Psychology in the context of contemporary schooling. Participants will draw on theoretical literature across both areas to critically evaluate current programs in school settings and apply theoretical knowledge to develop programs in their own school context.

Positive Education: Wellbeing and Student Achievement

Situated in the context of theory and research, this subject provides an overview of typical and atypical development from conception to adulthood across physical, cognitive, social and emotional domains. Biological and environmental influences on development are examined. Major theories relating to how learning occurs are examined and appraised. Implications for contemporary educators are explored with a focus on optimising developmental and learning outcomes to support the full participation of a diverse range of learners. In addition to its emphasis on knowing your students and how they learn, this subject focuses on effective engagement and interaction with parents/carers and communities. Theories of Development and Learning

This subject will provide an overview of local and international, historical and philosophical perspectives that have influenced contemporary Australian early childhood education and care contexts. Their impact on early childhood education and care and its leadership and management will be critically examined. The subject affords the opportunity to explore and critique policy and procedure development in the light of current legislative and accountability requirements.
