Illustrators use a variety of tools and techniques to create visual images and illustrations used in a variety of communication and literary works. They should have strong artistic and creative abilities and be able to understand client and stakeholder aspirations for illustrations.

Duties and tasks

  • Combine images and symbols to create visual representations of concepts, products, stories and ideas
  • Create and design original illustrations for a variety of media and industries including video games, film or television storyboards, magazine, book covers and children's story illustrations
  • Create drawings, sketches, painting, photography or visual images of designs for clients to review, and then create polished illustrations
  • Ensure that creation of illustration production in selected media accurately depicts desired illustration, working with necessary staff such as technicians, developers, and printers
  • Evaluate client requests and offer image ideas that meet all aspects of clients objectives; modify illustrations according to clients wishes
  • Recommend correct materials for produced illustrations
  • Use a variety of software programmes and tools to create original and creative illustrations to produce technical and aesthetically pleasing illustrations

Working conditions

Illustrators typically work regular Monday to Friday hours but may need to work evenings or weekends in order to meet deadlines. They typically work in studios using a variety of software equipment. They may need to travel to meet with clients and discuss illustration objectives.
