Construction Manager

Construction Managers are completely in charge of projects from the planning stages all the way through to completion. They handle the complete coordination of projects such as those for civil engineering and infrastructure, commercial and residential buildings, houses and even large scale parking garages. Construction Managers must handle the crew of laborers and skilled tradesmen as well as permits, equipment and machinery rentals and supervising the construction project.

Duties and tasks

  • Bidding and negotiating on projects
  • Coordinating laborers and tradesmen
  • Ensuring laws and codes are followed
  • Ensuring materials and equipment are delivered on time
  • Implementing specifications for a project
  • Overseeing all work
  • Reading blueprints
  • Set up building inspections with the proper authorities
  • Subcontracting certain services
  • Submitting plans to zoning boards

Skills required

Working conditions

Construction Managers work under a variety of conditions including heat, cold, rain and occasionally snow. This is a high stress position as deadlines must be met and laborers must be ready and able to perform their duties readily, however it is rewarding when the project comes to fruition.
