On successful completion, a student will be able to
- Demonstrate understanding of foundational terms such as risk appetite, risk aversion, tactical vs. strategic advantage, and ambiguity in decision-making contexts.
- Understand and analyse decision-making processes under conditions of uncertainty.
- Apply structured risk assessment frameworks to evaluate risks in security-related scenarios, distinguishing between acceptable, mitigatable, and exploitable risks.
- Apply interdisciplinary approaches to solve real-world security challenges in simulations and case studies involving high-stakes security dilemmas.
- Critically examine the social and ethical dimensions of risk choices, including cultural perceptions of risk, equity impacts, and responsibility in strategic leadership.
- Develop strategic responses that adapt to volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous conditions through critical thinking and scenario planning.

Almost every decision involves a degree of risk. Most people, however, believe that risk is something that should always be avoided and feared. This unit teaches students to make sound risk assessments, and understand that risks can either be accepted, mitigated or exploited for tactical or strategic advantage. Sometimes it is advisable to be risk adverse and at other times to have a risk appetite. Knowing when to lean into risk is the key to any successful strategy. Risk & Strategy is an interdisciplinary unit that explores how individuals and organisations identify, assess, and respond to uncertainty while aligning their actions with long-term objectives. Through case studies, simulations, and applied frameworks, students will learn to evaluate strategic choices under conditions of ambiguity, model and manage risk, and design resilient strategies that adapt to complex environments. By the end of the unit, students will be equipped to make informed, strategic decisions under pressure and uncertainty, essential skills for leaders, entrepreneurs, consultants, and analysts in any sector.

What’s a single subject?
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
How can I use single subjects to get into a full degree?
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.

How do I enrol?
When you’ve made your choice, click ‘Enrol now’ on the relevant course page and follow the prompts to begin your enrolment. We’ll ask you to supply some supporting documentation, including proof of your identity, your tax file number, and a unique student identifier (USI) during this process.
Your university will get in touch with you via email to confirm whether or not your application has been successful.
