About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Evaluate the key principles, theories, and concepts of psychological assessment and testing. Demonstrate the application of psychological assessment to real world settings and identify issues related to the appropriate use of psychological assessment in diverse contexts, including cultural and individual diversity.
- Work independently and as part of a group to evaluate empirical evidence for psychometric properties of psychological assessment tools.
- Interpret, synthesise, and report on the outcomes of psychological assessment and develop recommendations based on quantitative and qualitative assessment information.
- Develop an awareness of the ethical and professional conduct requirements associated with psychological testing and assessment.

In this subject you will develop the ability to evaluate and interpret information gathered from measures and approaches used in psychological assessment. The subject will be comprised of three themes covering measurement theory, individual differences, and psychological assessment in applied contexts. Lectures in measurement theory will cover classical and modern psychometric approaches to the construction, implementation, and evaluation of psychological measures. Lectures in individual differences will extend on the coverage of cognitive ability, personality, and emotion offered in introductory psychology subjects, with a focus on assessment. Lectures in applied psychological assessment will cover the issues associated with the appraisal of behaviours, thoughts, interests and emotions across clinical, educational, and forensic contexts. This subject is a capstone subject in a psychology major.
This subject consists of self-guided online lessons and timetabled tutorial classes. It is typically taken by students in their third year.

What’s a single subject?
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
How can I use single subjects to get into a full degree?
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
