About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Communicate about everyday topics and past, present and future events and experiences in basic written Italian, deducing and following appropriate structural patterns and models to achieve clarity and accuracy.
- Understand simple Italian written and audio texts relating to a range of day-to-day activities and produce appropriate responses to these texts.
- Work with a partner or as part of a team to perform, in Italian, oral tasks related to a range of topics and scenarios explored in class, formulating ideas and requests in a culturally appropriate way and relating these to the contributions of other students.
- Italian culture and customs
- Day-to-day life in Italy, including such topics as shopping, cultural events, festivals, and our changing world
- Italian linguistic structures including the imperfect and future tenses, the imperative mode, and direct and indirect pronouns
- Writing and speaking about a range of day-to-day topics using the past, the present and the future tenses
This subject completes the introduction to the basic grammatical structures of Italian. You build on your work in Italian 1 by extending your oral and written skills through the use of written, audiovisual and online learning materials. Culture is embedded throughout language, so learning another language develops your intercultural communication skills, preparing you to be responsive and agile in varied situations. Classes are interactive and participation is essential. Teaching and group work are carried out in Italian. The subject equips you to begin attaining a level equivalent to A2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

- Test 1 (grammar, vocab and writing) (in class) (1200-word equivalent) (30%)
- Online grammar quizzes (800-words equivalent). This includes an early quiz worth 10%, feedback on which will be given early in Week 5. (20%)
- Oral assessment (prova orale): conversational role plays in small groups (600-words equivalent per student) (15%)

What’s a single subject?
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
How can I use single subjects to get into a full degree?
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
