Subject details

At the completion of this study period students will:

  1. be familiar with the main explanatory frameworks offered in screen studies: biography, industrial or economic history, aesthetics, technology, audiences, gender
  2. have acquired the conceptual tools and appropriate vocabulary to undertake screen research 
  3. be able to analyse individual and groups of screen texts in terms of their relationship to wider social, technical, economic and political issues 
  4. be able to recognise the different kinds of arguments made by screen theorists and scholars concerning the relationship between film and wider social, cultural and technical issues 
  5. have acquired, in addition to these discipline specific skills, better generic skills, including an understanding of how to apply ideas, the ability to analyse, to think critically, and to write clearly
  6. as well as teaching the degree-specific skills above, our aim is to encourage students to develop written communication skills, critical judgement, informed independence of thought, and the ability to conduct research.

This subject introduces you to historical research into film and television. You will learn a range of explanatory frameworks used in screen analysis including: Industrial and Economic History; Technology; Audiences; Authorship and Gender. You will develop skills in the use and verification of evidence, research and historical explanation.

By the end of the subject, you will be familiar with key frameworks used in screen studies, possess the conceptual tools and vocabulary for screen research and be able to analyse screen texts in relationship to social, technical, economic and political issues. You will also be able to recognise different arguments made by theorists and understand how to apply ideas, analysis, critical thinking and clear writing to screen text analysis.
