About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- Explain the importance of family businesses to world-wide economies with a particular focus on the Australasian economy.
- Evaluate the stages of evolution of a family business, the role entrepreneurship plays, and the players involved
- Analyse the operations and management system of a family business and apply the principles of a good governance system
- Evaluate the various options available when planning for succession and/or exit of the family from the business

This course evaluates student performance for Assurance of Learning purposes for the Program Learning Objectives (PLO): Critically analyse local and global business issues to apply inclusive, socially responsible and sustainable practices.

The aim of this course is to understand the complex workings of businesses that are family-owned and run. The course explores the unique personal and interpersonal issues, as well as the business issues associated with the family-owned and managed firm.
Students should not enrol in the subject if they have completed: 2029IBA Family Business in Asia or 3046IBA Family Business Management.

Single subject FAQs
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
