What you'll learn

At the completion of this subject students will be able to:

  1. apply kanji, grammar and vocabulary to authentic materials at JLPT N2 level
  2. collect and evaluate information in order to formulate Japanese paragraphs on complex topics related to contemporary issues in Japan
  3. communicate confidently in writing and speaking on topics drawn from academic discourse
  4. analyse and assess texts in socio-cultural, geographical, and historical contexts

You must either have successfully completed the following subject(s) before starting this subject, or currently be enrolled in the following subject(s) in a prior study period; or enrol in the following subject(s) to study prior to this subject:

  • CUR-JPN300-Advanced Japanese: Intercultural Communication

If you study the prerequisite subject(s) in the study period immediately prior to studying this subject, your result for the prerequisite subject(s) will not be finalised prior to the close of enrolment. In this situation, should you not complete your prerequisite subject(s) successfully you should not continue with your enrolment in this subject. Description

This subject aims to develop and maintain an advanced competence in modern Japanese at JLPT N2 level. Learning materials are taken from a variety of up-to-date authentic media, TV, film, websites and digital media. The subject explores a number of issues in Japanese society and examines how they contribute to cultural and social identify. Students will learn to reflect critically on the complex intersection between language, identity, and society in Japan.
