Building Construction Measurement
About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- describe the uses of measurement in the local and international construction industries
- apply industry principles and rules, such as Standard Method of Measurements, for measuring and describing construction works
- analyse and interpret drawings and specifications for measuring construction works
- apply methods to produce measurements for construction works in accordance with industry principles and rules
- Introduction to basic measurement principles and methods
- Building measurement for groundwork, concrete, formwork and reinforcement
- Building measurement for structural systems, such as steelwork, masonry and timber frames
- Measurement for façade systems, windows, doors and hardware
- Measurement of plumbing and electrical works and roofing
- Measurement for painting and finishing
In this subject, students will be required to undertake accurate measurements for preparing a Bill of Quantities in accordance with the relevant Standard Method of Measurements. Students will demonstrate alternative approaches to measurement for detailed builder’s quantities, using suitable software. They will also be required to demonstrate their understanding of construction knowledge, ability to read and interpret construction drawings and be familiar with the construction technical terms that they will come across in real projects.
