At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- interpret articles and reports concerned with contemporary issues in Japan
- identify the formality of a situation or the distance between speakers and use honorific (respectful and humble) forms
- compose detailed text on subjects related to personal interests and experience
- present clear, detailed descriptions of subjects related to work (speech)

This subject strengthens students’ ability to engage in authentic communication in formal settings such as interviews for job hunting. Students gain real life experience in writing job applications. Tutorials include comprehensive practice in using honorifics. Reading materials are extracted from newspaper reports and magazine articles which are at levels N2 and N3 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test.
