At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- explain the use of appropriate language when participating in a range of formal and informal situations
- exchange opinion and conduct discussion in Chinese on familiar current affairs and social topics
- extract factual information from audio and print sources and reproduce main points orally and in writing
- apply cultural knowledge and language skills to facilitate discussions on issues about Chinese society

This subject develops students' communicative competence in the Chinese language over a wide range of real-life situations. The four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing will be integrated in collaborative learning activities. The emphasis is on language register and language variations when expressing different opinions and dealing with more complex social situations. The cultural significance of language usage will be examined, together with systematic discussion of appropriate manners and social etiquette to enable effective communication with Chinese speakers.
