About this subject

• What you'll learn

  On satisfying the requirements of this subject, students will have the knowledge and skills at an Advanced Beginner level of Thai to:

  • Recognise and use Thai phonemes, including tones, with improved accuracy as well as recognise some etiquette implications of such features of pronunciation as softening.
  • Use an active vocabulary of about 2000 items, to allow more detailed interactions, expression of views and simple interviewing activities.
  • Recognise and use longer sentence structures and passages, identify sentence boundaries in the absence of punctuation, and use appropriate particles.
  • Communicate in speaking and writing to request information in day‐to‐day life, about Thai society, and from Thai people.
  • Demonstrate a nuanced understanding of Thai customs relating to religion and other beliefs.

  In order to achieve these learning outcomes, each week students are expected to study for 5 hours as follows:

  • 60 minutes, before class, studying the written and audio materials for the week
  • 180 minutes, participating in two 90 minute sessions via zoom
  • 60 minutes, completing weekly exercises

  In addition, students are expected to spend at least 5 hours of individual study practicing the week's written and spoken language forms, vocabulary, and reviewing feedback on their work. 

  The total workload for the course is 130 hours over 12 weeks of class and the examination period.

Entry requirements

Prior study

To help set you up for success before you start this subject, we suggest completing or having equivalent knowledge in:

• ANU-THAI1002-Thai 1

Others

Completion of THAI1002 Thai 1 or demonstration of equivalent level through completion of a placement test. Students with prior knowledge of the language will be required to take a placement test. Students are not permitted to enrol in a subject that is lower than the level they achieve in the placement test, or a lower level than a subject they have already completed.

Students without the appropriate level of proficiency for ANU-THAI1003 (Thai 2) will be withdrawn from this subject and we will recommend an alternative subject at the correct level.

Study load
