About this degree
Upon completion of the Undergraduate Certificate in Education Support, graduates should be able to
- Identify and describe features of educational theory and practice, the Australian curriculum and the role of education support staff in enhancing student learning
- Apply your skills to operate ethically, inclusively and collaboratively in diverse, complex and at times unpredictable learning contexts to support the delivery of a differentiated curriculum for individual learners
- Communicate clearly and sensitively with students, colleagues, parents/carers
- Apply your skills and knowledge to contribute to problem-solving, working collectively, to support the delivery learning outcomes for students.
The Undergraduate Certificate in Education Support is a 4 subject course intended to provide a base level of understanding of educational practices for Teacher Aides/School Support Officers/Home Schooling parents.
This certificate supports key skills, desirable in numerous education careers and those other than teaching, in particular in a classroom setting as Integration Aides, Teacher Aides, and School Support Officers. Graduates will also be sought after in the industry training sector, and will be suited to communication-based jobs, public relations and other sectors that value well-developed problem-solving, communication and critical thinking skills.
Opportunity to study without tuition fees
Domestic students commencing the Undergraduate Certificate in Education Support in Semester 2 2021 may be eligible to receive a 100% HECS fee waiver.
Please note that, subject to unit availability, all 4 units of the certificate are required to be completed by 30 June 2022 to receive 100% HECS fee waiver for each unit, with a minimum of 2 units completed by 31 December 2021.

Entry requirements
Domestic applicants with higher education study
To be eligible for an offer, you must have:
- Completed a course at Associate Degree level or higher at any Australian higher education provider (or an equivalent overseas qualification); or
- Completed at least two units of study (equivalent to 25 UTAS credit points) of a course at Associate Degree level (or an equivalent overseas qualification). If you have failed any units your application may be subject to further review before an offer is made; or
- Completed the UTAS Diploma of University Studies; or
- Competed the UTAS University Preparation Program, or an equivalent enabling program offered by another Australian university.
Domestic applicants
Domestic applicants who have recently completed secondary education (in the past two years).
To be eligible for an offer, you must have an ATAR of 40 or above. This is the minimum ATAR needed for your application to be considered. Applicants are ranked by ATAR and offers made based on the number of places available. Applicants who have recently completed senior secondary studies but have not received an ATAR may still be eligible for admission. We will consider your study plan and subject results on a case-by-case basis when we assess your application.
The lowest ATAR to receive an offer in 2019 is not available, as this is a new course for 2020.
Domestic applicants with VET / TAFE study
To be eligible for an offer, you must have completed:
- A Certificate III (or equivalent) in a related field; or
- A Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma (or an equivalent qualification) in any field.
Domestic applicants with work and life experience
If you have not successfully completed senior secondary, tertiary or TAFE/VET study, but have relevant work and life experience you can complete a personal competency statement.
If you apply based on your previous work and life experience and your application is not successful, we will work with you to find an alternative pathway into your chosen course of study
The University of Tasmania grants credit and recognition of prior learning that may include formal and/or informal prior learning. More information is available here.
Career opportunities

Degree FAQs
How long does it take to finish an online degree?
That's up to you! Because we let you choose when to study online, you can actually pick up and pause study when it suits you. Many universities have a set time you need to complete your degree within. For some this is up to 10 years, and for others there is no limit.
There are some degrees that are stricter about when you can take breaks, and about how many years you can take to complete your degree. Please always check with your uni what the limits are.
As a general guide, Commonwealth supported place students have 10 years to finish their undergraduate degree through OUA, However, if you're studying with Griffith University, there's a limit of 8 years to complete your studies. If you want to take a break that lasts more than two study terms, you'll need to apply for a leave of absence. You can apply for a leave of absence for up to 12 months, as long as you complete your studies within the maximum time allowed for your degree.
If you're studying with Macquarie University, with the exception of certain degrees, there's no limit to how long you can take. But, please check with Macquarie Student Administration to be sure.
If you're studying with the University of Adelaide, you have up to 9 years to complete your undergraduate degree and graduate.
If you're studying with La Trobe University and want to take a break of minimum 1 study term, you must apply for leave of absence to avoid being inadvertently withdrawn from your degree.
Through OUA, you can study all year round, so it's possible to fast-track and finish up sooner than studying at a traditional uni would allow. That said, you need to spend around 12 hours a week on each undergraduate subject you do, so taking on extra work to finish ahead of time can be challenging.
How can I pay for my studies?
You may be eligible for a HELP loan from the Australian government, depending on your citizenship status and where you'll be living during your studies. You can also pay upfront with your credit card.

How does studying through Open Universities Australia work?
