This subject follows on from the first trimester 200-level unit in Chinese, and is designed to complete your basic grounding in Modern Standard Chinese. Your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in Chinese will be further developed, as will your skills and strategies as a language learner. Attention will be given both to the structures and patterns of the language, as well as to its socio-cultural context, and various aspects of Chinese culture, customs and society are introduced through studying spoken and written language texts.

Chinese Language 2B

Future proof your career by further developing your Chinese language skills. In this language proficiency subject you will continue the progression from the 200-level subjects in Chinese language. By the time you reach this level, your grounding in all the major grammatical patterns of Modern Standard Chinese is completed; enabling speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in Chinese to be developed to a more sophisticated level. Coverage of topical themes from an intercultural perspective will extend your insights into comparative cultural values and attitudes as expressed through language. By the end of this subject you should be able to recognise 1000 words in Chinese characters.

Chinese Language 3A

This subject is designed to build on previously established foundations of Modern Standard Chinese (Mandarin). Your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in Chinese will be developed, as will your skills and strategies as a language learner. Attention is given both to the structures and patterns of the language, and also to its socio-cultural context, and you will be introduced to various aspects of Chinese culture, customs and society through studying spoken and written language texts.

Chinese Language 2A

This subject develops students&#39; communicative competence in the Chinese language over a wider range of real-life situations. Conversation, readings, discussions and report writing will be conducted on topics in relation to the contemporary Chinese society and culture. The cultural significance of language usage will be examined, together with systematic discussion of appropriate manners and social etiquette to enable effective communication.﻿Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. Intermediate Chinese: Everyday Contexts

This course covers a selection of advanced readings in Literary Chinese. Each semester, students study a different type of Literary Chinese text, including historiography, excavated texts, anecdotal literature, poetry, and Buddhist Chinese. Students read prescribed texts in class. They receive tuition in the vocabulary, grammar, and syntax specific to each type of text and register of Literary Chinese. Students also discuss the contextual information necessary for appreciation of the texts under study; and practise using a range of Sinological research tools to discover and interpret such information.

Advanced Literary Chinese

This subject was previously known as Beginning Chinese. ﻿This subject introduces basic communicative skills in Mandarin Chinese at an elementary level. Students acquire the four essential language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing through ample practice in communicative activities supported by digital technology. Students will also be introduced to Chinese society, Chinese culture and the structure of the Chinese language through mini-lectures, audio-visual presentations, virtual real-time classroom and online tutorials.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. Get ready to speak at a basic level in Mandarin Chinese. You’ll build a vocabulary of common words and get to know basic grammar. Write short and simple sentences. Enjoy polite conversations. Touch on some Chinese cultural practices and traditions.

This subject was previously known as Beginning Chinese Developing. This subject covers both written and spoken Chinese at an introductory level that builds on prior knowledge gained in CHN100 Chinese for Beginners. A communication-oriented approach is used to help students develop confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing Standard Modern Chinese so that they will be able to interact with speakers of Chinese in simple day-to-day situations. A wider range of topics on Chinese society and culture will also be introduced through mini-lectures, audio-visual presentations and real-time classroom-based or online tutorials.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. Foundations of Chinese

Building on the foundation skills taught in TAS-HMC101, TAS-HMC102 further develops competence in beginners&#39; spoken and written Chinese (simplified characters). The focus is to improve speaking and listening, reading and writing skills.

Introduction to Chinese 1B

This course focuses on the analysis and translation of intermediate texts from various periods. Based on the knowledge acquired in Literary Chinese 1, the course attempts to improve the students’ proficiency in philological translation with a sample of different types of text. To meet the challenges posed by the selected texts, the course further introduces Sinological reference tools useful for their elucidation.

Literary Chinese 2

This lower intermediate unit consolidates the foundations laid in two-and-a-half previous years of Chinese study or the equivalent. The main focus of the unit is on understanding spoken Chinese, although some work on speaking, and on reading and writing Chinese characters is also incorporated and assessed. By studying many recordings of authentic spoken Chinese on a variety of topics relating to life in a Chinese context, you will expand your vocabulary, review and expand your knowledge of Chinese grammar, and extend your understanding of Chinese culture. By developing your listening skills you will be helped to understand spoken Chinese with greater confidence. You will also improve your proficiency in speaking Chinese while studying this unit.
