The Undergraduate Certificate in Agriculture is your opportunity to learn how to tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges in food production and sustainable farming – all while building a career in a fast-growing industry.You’ll learn about historical developments of the agricultural and horticultural industries in Tasmania and Australia, as well as learn about current and future opportunities predicted for the industry. You’ll be introduced to key concepts in food and fibre production, such as supply chains, value chains, value adding, and quality assessment, and explore the challenges of pests, weeds, and diseases in primary production, including the impact on productivity, profit and market access. You’ll also learn about Tasmanian animal production systems and explore a variety of strategies that growers use to meet their production targets.As part of this program, you’ll have the opportunity to attend excursions to Tasmanian commercial animal production enterprises, as well as hear from guest speakers in your practical tutorial sessions. This program also provides an opportunity for you to attend a 3.5 day field trip to the north-west of the state during the mid-semester break.

This subject will provide you with the basic skills and concepts of Industry 4.0 technologies and their applications across any advanced manufacturing industry, from large-scale industrial operations, small businesses and the emerging sole traders in niche design industries. The subject focuses on practical applications, employing simulation tools to develop skills in electrical circuit analysis and digital control system design. You will explore the complexities of electrical circuits, covering fundamental concepts such as voltage, current, and impedance, and explore advanced topics like operational amplifiers, sensors, and actuators. The digital control systems component introduces the practical applications of digital control systems across industries, encompassing both hardware and software aspects. Through case studies and simulated real-world environments, you will gain insights into real-time measurement, open and closed-loop control, and contemporary technology.

Electrical and Digital Control Systems

In this subject, you will learn about the procedural nature of cyber security. You will analyse the effectiveness of threat and vulnerability mitigation through use of contemporary cyber security frameworks. You will be explore mitigation strategies, operational controls, and countermeasures needed to address various threats and vulnerabilities from both technical and organisational perspectives. Upon completion of this subject, you will be able to apply your cyber security knowledge to communicate, support, and design improvements to business and personal cyber security posture (i.e. cyber security strength and readiness).

Defensive Cyber Security Procedures

This subject introduces you to industry approaches taken in threat intelligence and assessment. The subject will be task-focused and will allow you to explore the threat intelligence process with a focus on three key areas: understanding industry threat landscapes; legal and ethical considerations for penetration testing; and understanding and assessing penetration testing processes within industry contexts.

Cyber Threat Intelligence

This subject introduces the foundations of risk analysis, risk management, and contingency planning at an organisational level. The subject explores the foundations of risk across many industries and disciplines, examining the risk analysis process, contingency planning, business continuity and disaster recovery. By exploring the implications of current incidents in areas such as security, manufacturing, transportation, construction, and primary and secondary industries, you will gain insight into strategic and tactical decision making to avoid harm.

Risk and Security Management

In this subject, you will learn the core principles of sensors and sensor networks, investigating how these technologies are generating revolutionary scale change across many industries. You will acquire practical skills via simulation based learning for sensor deployment, sensor technology solutions aligned with industrial objectives, and sensor networks capable of transferring real-time data to external systems. Students will obtain the knowledge and skills needed to fulfil industry standards and solve authentic challenges in sensor network design through case studies and simulation based activities. You will develop self-awareness, initiative, and judgement while developing know how of Industry 4.0 and its potential to enhance decision making with near real time data, and drive efficiencies and innovation in industries at any scale.

Sensors and Sensor Networks

This subject explores the principles and applications of robotics and intelligent systems in a variety of sectors. It provides you with the necessary information and programming abilities to traverse real-world robotics settings. You will receive remote practical experience creating and completing robotics tasks through hands-on remote learning activities. You will work on projects that apply theoretical principles to real implementations. This subject also focuses on effective and inventive problem-solving methodologies, developing your ability to apply programming skills to industry applications. A comprehensive project report will demonstrate your knowledge of robotics foundations, problem-solving talents, and programming expertise.

Programming for Robotics

Quality management focuses on the quality of physical products as well as services and processes, and how they can be improved. The principles and processes of quality management are the key elements that businesses use to respond to market and customers’ needs and maintain business viability through improved efficiency, product quality and safety, and improvement of service delivery. Quality management is comprised of the four key components of quality planning, quality control, quality assurance and quality improvement. You will explore these four components and how they impact on issues such as customer focus, customer value, continuous improvement, process improvement and total quality management.

Quality Management

In this subject you will be introduced to the regulatory environment in which applied science enterprises operate. In particular, you will explore the regulatory challenges of product safety, biosecurity and environment protection, as well as business practices inherent in product development, manufacture and commercialisation. You will gain familiarity with various bodies (including local, state and federal government) that regulate applied science enterprises, learn how various tools including Australian and international standards support regulatory compliance by business, and apply your knowledge to explore questions of compliance in work-based scenarios.

Regulatory Challenges

This subject explores how different cultural understandings and models influence and shape how we interpret the world around us, perceive ourselves and relate to other people. You will build your cultural capability (knowledge, skills and attitudes) through self-awareness and reflection on the values, behaviours, beliefs and world views of yourself and others. The subject is underpinned by the cultural knowledge, lived experience and perspectives of diverse individuals, groups and communities, in particular Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This understanding will support your ability to engage in respectful relationships, and to make ethical, reflective and culturally-sensitive decisions in diverse professional contexts and environments.

Building Cultural Capability

Support services, both mainstream and specialised, are adopting contemporary disability practices to enable self-determination, choice and control by people with disability. This subject examines the evolution of disability practice with particular emphasis on the reforms arising from the Disability Royal Commission and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Using a rights-based framework, you will explore themes of participation and inclusion and develop professional skills in effective communication, advocacy, support coordination and capacity building.
