In this subject, you will be introduced to psychological therapies used in the management of mental health problems and treatment of addiction, either as stand-alone interventions or in combination with pharmacological interventions. You will have the opportunity to explore factors relevant to the experience of mental health, as well as a range of psychological interventions that can be implemented in therapeutic engagement with individuals in clinical and professional settings. Through this subject, you will explore the core principles and skills of therapeutic modalities relevant to mental health care and the treatment of addiction.

Psychological Therapies in Mental Health Care

The aim of this subject is to introduce the concept of positive psychology into leadership practices and principles. The subject has been designed to encourage you to critically explore the theories, constructs and models within positive psychology, and how they can be integrated into the workplace environment. As a relatively new area of academic inquiry and application, but one with a significant evidence base, this field is concerned with what works in creating a flourishing work environment rather than focusing on organizational deficits. On completing this subject, you will be expected to be familiar with positive psychology concepts, be able to discuss these concepts critically, and be able to review the potential of positive psychology principles in terms of your own working relationships and leadership practice. Having said that, this subject will not be teaching you how to become positive psychology practitioners per se, but you will have the potential to draw on a positive psychology perspective in your approach to your work either as an employee or a leader in the health and human service context.

Positive Psychology in Leadership

This subject examines strategies for changing criminal behaviour. The interventions explored in the subject are most frequently observed within the correctional system in both custodial and community settings; however, programs utilised in other sectors of the criminal justice system (i.e. police, courts) and in affiliated social service organisations are also included in the course where forensic populations are their target treatment group. The subject draws on psychological principles and research evidence, linking theories of crime causation to foundations of behaviour modification and propensity-reducing interventions. A review of specific programs is presented, although the focus of the subject is on the overarching design principles associated with positive client outcomes.Assessment details will be advised at the beginning of the subject offering.

Draw on psychological principles and research to identify strategies to change behaviour within the correctional system. Probe specific rehabilitation programs used in both in community and institutional settings to question the rehabilitation ideal.

Interventions for Correctional Clients

This subject provides an introduction to the field of study, integrating information about maternal and infant mental health. Dominant theoretical approaches are presented and considered together with information about infant development and pregnancy. Risk factors for mental health problems are presented for discussion and reflection, and information is provided about common disorders and treatment approaches. In addition, basic skills relating to building and presenting an argument, accessing and using professional literature, making an observational record, creating documents to professional standards, and managing one’s self under pressure will be covered.

Introduction to Perinatal and Infant Mental Health

This subject provides you with an introduction to studies in addictive behaviours in preparation for employment in the areas of alcohol and other substance counselling, treatment and prevention. It provides an overview of models of treatment and prevention of addictive behaviours with an emphasis on substance use disorders and behavioural addictions, such as gambling. Policy options and approaches to drug education and harm reduction are also introduced.

Addictive Behaviours

This subject examines current contemporary practices in the delivery of complex inter-professional care for people diagnosed with mental health issues. Emphasis on the concepts of promotion, prevention and early intervention will be considered. This subject explores concepts of leadership and management in the context of the development of care from both local and population health perspectives. It enables mental health practitioners and leaders of care to develop strategies to address complex health care alternatives.

Advanced Contemporary Mental Health Practice  2

This course examines current contemporary practices in the delivery of complex inter-professional care for people diagnosed with mental health issues. Emphasis on inter-professional care options within a variety of tertiary, secondary and community health settings are explored, especially in the context of therapeutic interventions. This course enables the mental health practitioner to develop, implement and evaluate patient centred treatment options whilst reflecting upon the ethical considerations inherent in determining appropriate care.

Advanced Contemporary Mental Health Practice 1

The course will examine current trends and practice in delivering mental health care to people with a lived experience of mental illness. Emphasis on treatment and care options within tertiary, secondary and community settings will highlight ways in which healthcare agencies partner with other organisations and services such as General Practitioners and Police. Students will debate and reflect the ethical considerations inherent in determining a variety of hospital and community-based treatments. This course is informed by current legislation.

Role of the Mental Health Practitioner in an Acute Setting

This subject focuses on the issues and challenges, both in theory and practice, of working with clients in the context of their intimate personal relationships. Students will have the opportunity to develop their thinking and skills in working systemically with more than one person. Introductory material will provide a framework for thinking about relationships and family of origin and will introduce students to various theoretical approaches to working with families and couples. This subject will emphasise the development of skills associated with working with families and couples facing particular challenges and problems through exploring practical counselling interventions.

Relationship Counselling

In this subject students will explore issues related to counselling with children and adolescents. Consideration is given to developmental issues, attachment, disorders of childhood and adolescence, chronic illness and disability. Strategies for intervention will also be addressed including engaging children in therapy and the therapeutic needs of children and adolescents facing specific problems. Child protection issues will also be explored. This subject is designed to equip students with basic knowledge with regard to child and adolescent functioning and practical skills for the delivery of child and adolescent counselling models.
