In this subject you will be introduced to the essential building blocks of language: the sounds and sound systems (phonetics and phonology), how words and sentences are structured (morphology and syntax)and how we understand meaning (semantics). Employing the analytical tools of linguistics, you will begin applying them to the development of a new language of your own imagining. The inspiration will come from a range of human languages, including major world languages, minoritized and endangered languages, and constructed languages.This is a level 1 subject and includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Imagining Language

What is language? Where did it come from, how do we learn it, and what do we use it for? This subject introduces students to a range of basic topics in the study of language: how to define language, the basic structure of language, language in the brain, how to distinguish languages from dialects, how language might have evolved, how children and adults acquire language, how and why languages change, and how language conveys social and cultural meaning, and different modalities of language (speech and sign).This is a level 1 subject and includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Speech pathology is the study, diagnosis and treatment of communication and swallowing disorders, and draws on many diverse fields to maximise people’s ability to communicate and participate in their daily lives. Linguistics provides a key foundation to understanding communication and communication disorders. This subject introduces you to the nature of speech and language; the content, form and use of language; relationships between areas of linguistic enquiry; and how speech and language is transcribed and analysed. You will engage with cases to understand why these areas are important when working with people who have communication difficulties. Analysis and description of phonology using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) will be introduced and its application explored. You will have opportunities to engage with interesting online resources to practice your skills in analysis. You will examine the sociocultural aspects of language and use critical thinking and self-reflection to examine the many facets of language.

Introductory Linguistics for Speech Pathology

This subject was previously known as EDC131 Language and Literacy for Teacher.
This subject provides an introduction to language, literacy and literature in the primary school, including the centrality of these strands of English to living and learning. Effective teaching of language, literacy and literature rests upon theoretical understanding and practical appreciation of the functions of language and literacy in sociocultural contexts. The modes, textual varieties, purposes and functions of English are emphasised as students develop confidence in their own professional literacy, especially in relation to writing and multimodal forms.

This subject includes a basic overview of approaches, methods, and techniques used in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). It focuses on developing successful classroom practices that address the learning needs and interests of culturally diverse and language minority students. Students in this subject will have the opportunity to apply what has been discussed in the workshops to hands-on teaching practices and detailed lesson planning.

Gain an overview of the approaches and methods used in teaching English to non-native speakers. Develop classroom techniques that address the needs of culturally diverse students to improve your teaching practices and detailed lesson planning.

This subject will support you to gain the theoretical understandings, skills and methodologies to provide learning and teaching experiences within the Languages domain. You will be required to develop a comprehensive and coherent base of theoretical understandings upon which to base future learning and teaching experiences, which will suit the diverse contexts in which Languages teaching may occur. You will begin to explore and apply to practice contemporary language teaching theories, methodologies, principles and practices as expressed in the ACARA Curriculum: Languages. Current issues in Language teaching will be critiqued to develop the learner&#39;s professional understanding of being a Language educator.

Languages Teaching Methodologies

Students are invited to explore the contemporary situation of language in Aboriginal Australia, contextualised in its various social settings, along with a strong emphasis on First Voice. This includes a focus on the languages of Victoria and language revitalisation, as well as new varieties of Aboriginal language such as Kriol. The subject provides students with the opportunity to reflect on understandings of language and culture, continuity and changes in the face of disruption, and on their connection with the local environment and its people.

Language in Aboriginal Australia

In today’s global economy, the ability to communicate in more than one language is essential. Not only is French widely used as a working language in business environments making it a career asset, it is also the language of many great works of film and literature. If you have little or no knowledge of French, this subject will help you develop the ability to communicate in the French speaking world and enhance your appreciation of French culture; music, film, theatre. You will learn how to read, understand, write and speak an elementary level of French. By the end of the unit you will be acquainted with basic grammatical structures. This subject also introduces you to many elements of French life and Francophone culture.

Get ready to speak French at a basic level. You’ll build a vocabulary of common words and get to know elementary grammar. Write short and simple sentences. Enjoy light conversations. Touch on French culture, history, and lifestyle.

This subject examines the relationship between language and culture and explores the different varieties of language and dialects, as well as the various styles and registers that can exist within any one language. The subject explores theories of language and language learning, including transcultural communication, to enhance the ability and confidence of teachers to work successfully in culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms. Specific reference will be made to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages and dialects as well as people learning English as an additional language.

This subject engages students by developing their knowledge base of language, literacy and literature in the Junior Primary phase of schooling. It expands on this knowledge by encouraging critical analysis of key theories and practices in the teaching of English to diverse groups, culminating in the ability to design purposeful learning opportunities.
