Business Information Systems &amp; Management is a foundation course that overviews the critical aspects of Information Management and Information Systems needed in all businesses in the 21st century. While primarily a business course, there will be consideration of the technical aspects necessary to be able to liaise meaningfully with IT departments and personnel. The predominant focus of the course will be the ability to leverage technology for business purposes. The course includes fundamental information management skills (eg: Spreadsheets &amp; Databases) and focuses on the use of information to make business decisions and solve business problems.

Business Information Systems and Management

In this subject, you are introduced to the broad concepts of health data and system development lifecyle (SDLC) and the purpose, scope, design and functionalities of health information systems. You will explore the theoretical concepts behind systems planning, analysis, design, implementation, evaluation, support and maintenance of the systems development lifecycle including issues that impact systems, data and information security. Through your assessments, you will demonstrate technical skills in systems planning, analysis and design phases of the SDLC by creating user stories and data flow diagrams as well as evaluating systems design. You will develop an understanding of how health professionals interact with the health information systems development lifecycle.

Health Information Systems Analysis and Design

Information systems within organisations have evolved at a rapid rate, and this subject provides students with an understanding of both the foundations of business information systems and recent developments of information systems for business.The development of business information systems is generally a collaborative project both within a department and between other departments, and this subject will discuss the challenges of working collaboratively within an organisation and develop these skills through teamwork activities and assessments. Lastly, while information systems provide a wealth of opportunity, the subject will also alert students to the risks and limitations of information systems for businesses and develop their critical thinking by demonstrating the ethical dimensions of information systems for business.

Management Information Systems

Modern accounting information systems allow organisations to make timely decisions based on reliable data and evidence. To future proof your career, you need the up-to-date skills and knowledge to apply this technology in your role. Studying this subject will equip you with the skills to effectively use software to produce information critical to business success. You will gain practical experience using an accounting software package to generate financial statements. You will hone your spreadsheet skills to build models to meet managers’ needs and enhance your database management skills to successfully handle large volumes of data. With a focus on internal control systems and the impact of cloud computing, you will analyse the interactions between technology and accounting systems.

Accounting Information Systems

This subject introduces methods and techniques for analysing problematic organisational situations, particularly those leading to the development of an information system, and draws on both technical and organisational material to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to design and implement an operational system.

Systems Analysis and Design

The digital transformation of business operations has led to an increasing demand for accounting and business professionals to develop information and communications technology (ICT) skills. This subject is designed to develop your ICT skills in the context of accounting practice. You will apply the key concepts and principles underlying the recognition, measurement, recording and provision of accounting information using accounting information systems that are powered by information technologies, business intelligence, and accounting software. You will also learn to employ these tools to develop, manage and control accounting information systems, as well as to critically evaluate the relevance and sufficiency of such systems and communicate the findings to relevant stakeholders.

This subject aims to present a coherent view on the role of knowledge and strategic information management in organisations from a multidisciplinary perspective. Students will gain an appreciation of the sources of information, unstructured and semi-structured knowledge and learn current techniques that permit knowledge and information to be applied to perform organisational activities. This subject will provide students with an understanding of how to strategically manage and govern the ICT function in business organisations. It builds on themes relating to managing ICT as an organisational resource and discusses the ICT function from strategy and governance perspectives. Students will develop skills and knowledge relating to the use of the latest technologies for managing information and knowledge and how to strategically manage and govern the ICT function in business organisations. The subject also emphasises the relationship between theoretical knowledge and its practical application using a real organisation.

Knowledge and Information Strategic Management

In this subject, you will learn design, management, extraction, integration, and reporting of health data. You will gain practical skills in developing and maintaining fully relational health databases using national health data standards and models. Theoretical and logical principles of health database and system administration will be introduced, including entity-relationship diagrams, normalisation, meta-data and an introduction to SQL for relational database queries and reporting. Specialised tools for visualisation of health data sets will also be taught.

Health Database Fundamentals

In this subject, you will explore governance functions in the health sector, including accountability, risk management, accreditation, and quality and safety management, with a focus on health information and supporting technologies within system and organisational contexts. You will develop an understanding of how health information is managed at multiple levels to support quality of care and service delivery. This includes examining individual patient records as evidence of care, aggregated data to measure and evaluate healthcare processes and outcomes, clinical documentation for diagnostic and therapeutic decisions, and coded data used to monitor and improve patient safety.
