This subject introduces students to the disciplines of criminology and criminal justice. It begins with an examination of the nature of crime and how it is defined and measured in contemporary society. The subject then provides an overview of the impact of criminological theories on our understanding of crime problems and the implications for criminal justice responses. A major part of the subject is focused on the dimensions of crime and the way crime is shaped by a range of personal and social characteristics. For example, we explore the relationship between crime and social class, the links between age and crime, the relationship between gender and crime, and the reasons for the substantial over-representation of Indigenous people in all parts of the criminal justice system in Australia. Importantly, the subject also explores the main criminological theories that have shaped how we understand why crime occurs, which have direct implications for how we respond to and reduce crime. These theories include structure and process theories, individual difference theories, and meaning making theories.

Examine crime and the ways it’s defined and explained in contemporary society. Study the relationship between crime and class, youth and crime (and the response), gender and crime, and the over-representation of Indigenous people.

This subject provides an overview of the various areas within the criminal justice system in which frontline workers come across people with mental disorders. It examines the way in which the criminal justice system (including police, court, and correctional staff) deals with individuals with mental disorders. In particular, the subject focuses on the identification and treatment of individuals with mental disorders; relevant processes and decision-making in different elements of the criminal justice system; examining contemporary approaches to definitions, diagnostic tools, notions of criminal responsibility and fitness to stand trial; and the use of psychological knowledge, theory, and research to guide reflective practice and build personal, professional resilience.

This foundation unit provides you with an introduction to the organisation, policies, practices and institutions that constitute the Australian Criminal Justice System. Broadly, this unit takes a scholarly and criminological approach towards the Australian Criminal Justice System. You will be investigating the substantial areas of the justice system including policing, court structures, the Rule of Law, the role of the coroner, sentencing and punishment, transnational policing, wrongful convictions, forensic expert witnesses, crime prevention and case studies. The unit is delivered through a combination of traditional and problem-based teaching methods. This subject was previously known as Social Science Research Methods.This subject is designed to teach students the logic of research methodology in the social sciences. Students will learn how to articulate a researchable problem, formulate research hypotheses, logically determine what research methodology provides the best avenue to test these hypotheses, and carry out research. Students will also develop the necessary skills to analyse and write criminal justice policies.

Criminology and Criminal Justice Research Methods

This subject was previously known as Forensic Criminology.Forensic science techniques are critical to criminal investigations as they can identify suspects in crimes and also make educated decisions about how and when a crime has occurred. In this unit you will examine how forensic evidence is applied to the criminal justice system. Using the theme of &#39;forensic identification&#39; classes explore a variety of forensic methods and the difficulties associated with concepts such as methodology, accuracy, confidence, reliability and admissibility. You will study how forensic science functions within the justice system, new challenges to forensic science as it responds to technology, forensic criminology theories and concepts, crime scene processes and recent inquiries into the validity of forensic science itself. You will be exposed to practical forensic applications and case studies pertinent to understanding the strengths and weaknesses of forensic evidence.

Forensic Science within Criminal Justice

This subject was previously known as Making Sense of Criminal Justice.This subject identifies, examines and evaluates current and emerging policies and structures of the criminal justice system. It focuses on debates and problematic issues in the provision of criminal justice. Components of the system are examined in terms of fairness, justice and effectiveness. The extent to which the Australian system is effective in maintaining maximum levels of social harmony is explored. Alternative models of criminal justice are critically examined within the context of liberal-democratic society.Assessment details will be advised at the beginning of the subject offering.

Examine the principal components of the criminal justice system and question the competing tensions of fairness, justice and effectiveness in a liberal-democracy. Identify emerging issues and analyse the response of allied systems to selected crimes.

In this subject you will focus on sociological approaches to crime and the criminal justice system with the objective of understanding research and debates about: (i) the criminal justice system (police, courts, corrections); (ii) patterns of crime (measuring crime victims and offenders, white collar crime, violent crime); (iii) the relationship between specific social groups (young people, women and Indigenous Australians) and the criminal justice system; (iv) responses to crime (crime prevention, victims, alternative dispute resolution).

This subject is designed for criminology students to develop a critical understanding of the key aspects of contemporary criminal law. This includes the general structure of criminal offences, as well as some specific and selected offences, including homicide. The course also develops your understanding of criminal process and procedure through the lenses of key institutions such as the courts, police, and juries.
