Surgeon

Surgeons treat diseases, deformities, human functioning, and injuries by invasive methods. Surgeons use specialised instruments and appliances, and sometimes manual manipulation.

Duties and tasks

  • Consults with Anaesthetists to determine the appropriate anaesthesia for patient
  • Examines patient and analyses medical history to verify the need for surgery and to determine the best procedure
  • Examines the operating room, equipment and instruments to ensure sterility
  • Oversees the activities of nurses, assistants, specialists and other medical staff
  • Performs surgical operations to repair injuries, correct deformities, treat diseases, or improve functions
  • Prescribes post-operative care and follows up with patient

Skills required

  • A desire to serve patients
  • Be able to handle pressure
  • Complex problem solving skills
  • Strong background in physics, biology and math
  • Strong communication skills

Working conditions

Surgeons need to be able to handle the stress of operating, and be able to make decisions in cases of emergency. Work days are long and can include multiple operations, depending on the types of surgeries that are scheduled. While performing surgery, Surgeons can be on their feet for several hours at a time.
