Statistician

Statisticians develop or apply statistical theory and methods to collect, interpret, organise and compile numerical data. This data is then used to solve problems in a specialised field, such as biology, agriculture, business or economics.
 

Duties and tasks

  • Analyses and interprets statistical data
  • Designs research projects for collecting data
  • Ensures validity, efficiency and accuracy of statistical methods
  • Organises information in chart, table or graph form
  • Processes large amounts of data
  • Represents the organisation and/or team in a positive manner
  • Supervises clerks collecting and compiling data

Skills required

  • A Bachelors degree in related field
  • Accuracy with numbers
  • Good managerial and organisational skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Working knowledge of computer programs

Working conditions

Statisticians work in an office, Monday through Friday, for at least 40 hours a week. Much of their time is spent in front of a computer. Statisticians may need to travel to present information.
