What you'll learn

By the end of this 10-week course, you’ll be able to:

  1. Discuss burden of disease in the national and international context.
  2. Compare and contrast health status (risk, prevalence and outcomes) across local, national and international populations as a result of, social, cultural and environmental factors.
  3. Identify and describe the basis for differences in health status with particular emphasis on Aboriginal people and disadvantaged populations.
  4. Identify and describe current and future challenges to health and health care systems.
  5. Demonstrate foundational academic skills with a particular emphasis on creating, manipulating and interpreting data and graphs.

Description

Study the social, cultural and environmental determinants of health, with a specific focus on the health of Aboriginal people and disadvantaged populations.

Cover common measures of health such as morbidity, birth/death rates and burden of disease. Identify risk factors, current and future challenges to health and health care system, and explore principles and interventions in health promotion.

As part of your studies, you’ll have the chance to advance your Microsoft Excel skills where you’ll use real health data to practice descriptive data analysis, create graphs and interpret your results.
