Subject details

At the completion of this subject students will be able to:

  1. identify social and political situations which impact on the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  2. identify ways in which global situations have influenced the history of Australian race relations
  3. explore the impact of colonisation on Aboriginal people
  4. examine the perspectives as expressed by Aboriginal groups on contemporary issues.

Students will develop broad understanding and knowledge of historical and contemporary issues that have and still impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Students will explore social justice and human rights, reconciliation, diversity of Aboriginal social and political situations, Australian racism, power and powerlessness, employment, health, housing, Indigenous Australians and the criminal justice system, stolen generations, media, native title and sovereignty and self-determination.

  • 1500 words (Take-home exam) (45%)
  • 300 words (20%)
  • 5-7 mins of spoken word equiv (35%)
