Introductory Chemistry
About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- understand chemistry plays an essential role in society;
- demonstrate an understanding of fundamental chemical principles such as matter, elements, ions, molecules and compounds, atomic structure, measurements and chemical reactions;
- describe, interpret and explain basic chemical concepts including bonding, stoichiometry, solutions, acid-base and redox chemistry;
- describe and interpret types of hydrocarbons;
- solve simple mathematical and conceptual chemistry problems, and demonstrate a capability for self-directed learning; and
- communicate knowledge by interpreting the essential details of experimental procedures, key observations, results and conclusions; and applying theory.
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
This subject is a foundation level bridging subject designed for students entering science-based degree programs who have no background in chemistry.
Assessment 1: Online Quizzes. 4 online quizzes. Each individual quiz weighted at 5%. It is mandatory to achieve an overall pass in this component in order to pass the subject. Relates to Learning Outcomes: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Assessment 2: Online Laboratory Skills Quiz. It is mandatory to pass this component in order to pass the subject. Relates to Learning Outcomes: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Assessment 3: Mid-Trimester Examination. It is mandatory to pass this component in order to pass the subject. Relates to Learning Outcomes: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Final Examination: Must obtain at least 45% in the Final Examination and obtain an overall passing grade. The exam will be offered online with supervision via webcam and screen sharing technology. Coordinated by UNE Exams Unit.Relates to Learning Outcomes: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
