Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- explain how data and information is represented within a computer system and how it is manipulated and processed;
- demonstrate an understanding of layers of abstraction and how computer architectures are built from underlying digital components
- explain the fundamental principles of data structures, data representations, data storage and relationships between data; and
- demonstrate an understanding of the relationships between logic, reasoning, data, and programs.
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.

Data and the capacity to process it are the most valuable assets in many fields. Through this unit, you will learn how data is represented, stored, and processed in computer systems.
The subject builds from low level concepts of digital logic, through data representation and computer architecture, to data processing and algorithms. You will develop a high level of technology literacy, including common data types, relationships between data, and how abstraction lets us move from low level hardware concepts to higher level programming concepts.
The subject aims to give you an introductory understanding of the links between logic, reasoning, data, and computation. This includes reasoning about algorithms, and also how programs can operate on concepts such as sets and graphs.
The subject also develops a general awareness of information security, ethical, and legal issues related to information technology.
