About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- work with well-chosen literature to identify a research problem and propose an effective strategy with which to resolve that problem.
- apply disciplinary knowledge, exercise critical thinking and analytical skills, make effective and ethical use of data, and demonstrate technical proficiency appropriate to your discipline to argue for your evidence-based research findings.
- reflect critically on the skills and knowledge you have acquired through research in the Humanities and Social Sciences, and effectively communicate to others how these prepare you for the future of work and research.
- A week-by-week guide to the topics you will explore in this subject will be provided in your study materials.
This unit consists of an independent research project in the Humanities and Social Sciences, drawing on a student's Major and/or Minor discipline areas. Interactive workshops introduce students to skills and methods necessary for undertaking effective research projects, including identifying a research problem, proposing research aims and objectives, choosing an appropriate method, and engaging ethically with data and evidence. You will work with a unit coordinator and in collaboration with others to undertake a unique research project of your own. Demonstrating critical and analytical thinking, innovative problem solving, effective communication, persuasive argument, ethical practice, impact and influence, you are acquiring important skills for the future of work and research.
The learning experiences of this unit also provide a transition into important practices for university life, including writing, thinking, reading, viewing, research, and collaborative work.

Single subject FAQs
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
