At the completion of this subject students will be able to:

  1. describe the behaviour of matter using the laws and models of classical physics
  2. solve problems in physics that do not require knowledge of calculus.
  • Assignment 1 - Problem solving; short answer (20%)
  • Assignment 2 - Problem solving assignments (20%)
  • Assignment 3 - 2 hour closed book (50%)
  • Assignment 4 - Laboratory reports x 5 (10%)

This is an introductory physics subject, designed to provide a basis for further studies in the physical sciences. It covers a range of topics including measurement, motion, waves, light, thermal energy, electric and magnetic fields. This subject does not require knowledge of calculus. Applications and examples are drawn from the biological, environmental, medical and physical sciences.
