Dubbed 'Cool Japan' in the West, Japan is a non-Western, post-modern liberal democracy which continues, nevertheless, to exhibit 'pre-modern' tendencies to promote a strong sense of ethnic identity. This subject allows for an in-depth study of Japanese society, drawing on sociological concepts and ethnographic studies. Topics include identity politics, gender, social inequality, the environment, education, the family, popular culture, human rights and peace. This subject is conducted entirely in English and the reading material is in English. After the two week delivery, you are given an extra fortnight to write their essay. You will come away with a sophisticated understanding of contemporary Japan.
Please note: This subject is a TWO-WEEK intensive held DAILY, Mon to Fri from 10am to 3pm (with a one hour lunch break) in November. However, it is embedded in the 'summer one' time slot, which is actually a twelve week time slot. This means that the grades for this subject are not released by the university until Feb or March the following year.

If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
