About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of a range of ideas related to language, society and culture presented within the subject
- Apply tools and concepts from intercultural communication, sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology to novel situations
- Critically reflect on your own and others’ societies cultures and how they influence interactions
- Research and examine an intercultural or sociolinguistic issue in depth and present your findings in writing

In this subject, you will reflect on how society and culture shapes language use and communication between individuals and between groups. Drawing on a range of ideas from the fields of intercultural communication, sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology, students develop tools, knowledge and awareness to assist them in understanding and positively engaging with the linguistic and cultural diversity around them.
- Online quizzes (4 across the semester) (800 words equivalent) (20%)
- A reflective research exercise (1600 words equivalent) to be completed during semester (40%)
- An original research project in which you will collect and analyse data to be submitted at the end of the semester (1600 words equivalent). (40%)

Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.

If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
