About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Apply an understanding of socio-cultural perspectives of psychology to human behaviour and experiences
- Identify appropriate information sources to develop logical, well-supported, and appropriately referenced written arguments based on empirical evidence.
- Demonstrate sensitivity and knowledge of diversity in cultural beliefs, practices, and communication styles.

In this subject you will be introduced to key areas of psychology with a socio-cultural perspective. People share knowledge with others in society. The shared knowledge (i.e., culture) gives meanings to people’s lives as well as influencing their everyday behaviour, the sense of who they are, their personal relationships and psychological wellbeing. We will discuss psychology of individuals in diverse contexts to understand how personal experiences, including emotions, motivation, intimacy with others and health behaviours are shaped by cultural understanding and social expectations in those contexts.
- Reflection Video Assessment (500-word equivalent, 5-minute oral presentation) (15%)
- Written Essay (1000 words) (25%)
- 2 x Online Topic Quizzes (2250 words equivalent = 2 x 1125-word quizzes, 90 minutes each) (60%)

Past La Trobe University students who have previously completed PSY1PYB (Psychology 1B), or PSY1PSB (Psychology Studies B), or PSY1CFP (Clinical Foundations of Psychological Science) are ineligible to enrol in this subject.

Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
