About this subject
- Develop awareness of and participation in the target language and cultural aspects of Hindi speaking areas of India
- Develop communicative skills through pair and group work activities
- Learn to read and write Devanagari script system and write short texts
- Integrate discrete learning to produce a new meaningful whole by participating in class, doing homework and completing assessment

This subject is designed for people with little or no previous knowledge of Hindi. Primary emphasis will be placed on developing the proficiency necessary to converse with native speakers on a variety of subjects. The Hindi script is introduced and topics covered include: asking questions, forms of greetings, shopping, introducing one's self, train travel, family life, health issues, village life, planning trips, studying in college and popular media. At the end of this subject students should be able to read and write basic Hindi and take part in simple conversations. It is recommended that student take AST1IJI and AST1ICI with this subject.
- Two 1-hr exams, one mid-term one final, each equivalent to 1000 words (50%)
- One 10-minute oral and aural test (equivalent to 800 words). (20%)
- Homework exercises (equivalent to 400 words). (10%)
- Weekly 5-minute quiz (equivalent to 400 words). (10%)
- Weekly tutorial exercises (equivalent to 400 words). (10%)

Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
