About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Recognise and respond to more basic vocabulary and grammatical constructions in Auslan consistent with the A1 level in the CEFR framework.
- Produce a range of more basic vocabulary and grammatical constructions in Auslan consistent with the A1 level in the CEFR framework.
- Demonstrate language awareness through describing similarities and differences between Auslan and English.
- Identify and describe the historical challenges and issues experienced by the deaf community.
- Describing Art and Artists in Auslan
- Learning about History in Auslan
- Learning about the System and How it Works in Auslan
In this subject, you will continue to develop practical abilities in both receptive and production skills in Auslan to a level of basic communicative competence. You will be introduced to key grammatical structures of Auslan and the use of the language in its appropriate cultural, social context and begin to understand the history of Auslan and the deaf community. Culture is embedded throughout language, so learning another language develops your intercultural communication skills, preparing you to be responsive and agile in varied situations.
This is a level 1 subject. Please note the prerequisite requirement for enrolling in this subject. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

- Two comprehension tasks (equivalent to 1600 words) (40%)
