About this subject
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of Asian popular culture across Asian societies.
- Critically analyse the nature of social, economic and cultural change in Asia in a variety of contexts.
- Evaluate issues in Asian Studies from a variety of disciplinary perspectives in the humanities and social sciences (e.g. History, Sociology, Anthropology, Cultural Studies etc).
- • Asian cinema.
- • Manga, anime, and other Asian comic book forms.
- • K-pop and idol culture.
- • Fashion and textiles.
- • Globalisation.
This subject takes a broad interdisciplinary approach to engage with and critique various elements of popular culture across East Asia, South Asia and South East Asia. You will reflect on what makes something 'popular' across five categories: film, fashion, music, novels and media mixes, and anime/ manga. These categories are explored in terms of, for example, nationalism, religion, education, technology, media, and language.
- Final Essay, 2000 words. Students can choose a question from a list provided. (45%)
- Weekly Quizzes, 800 word equivalent. Short quizzes based on the lecture and readings undertaken at the start of each tutorial/workshop. (20%)
- Journal Article Critique, 800 words. Short critical response to one of the prescribed course readings. (20%)
- Tutorial Presentation/Poster, 500 word equivalent. Short presentation on a key topic from the subject. (15%)

If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
