Master of Teaching (Primary)

On successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

The University of Tasmania’s Master of Teaching (Primary) prepares you to make a real difference in the lives and futures of young people. Building on your existing expertise and experience, you will develop key capacities, knowledge and skills in leadership, teaching and learning to provide a safe and effective learning environment where all students can flourish. You will be learning how to teach and how to be a teacher collaboratively with peers.

The UTAS Master of Teaching (Primary) is designed to step your learning through two stages. In the first stage you will develop foundational knowledge about teaching, the curriculum and the schooling context. The second stage you will integrate theory and practice as you learn how to teach in a school setting with experienced teachers over an extended placement.

Recommended study pattern

In the Master of Teaching (Primary) you will complete 

• 200 credit points of core units and;
• 60 days of Professional Experience placement.

This degree can be completed full-time over two years, or in four years when studied as part of a vertical double, or part time over three years (two years part time, with final year full time).

Enrolment in the degree is for a maximum of five years.

Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE)

All students must attempt the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) in their first year of study and both tests must be successfully passed prior to undertaking the final placement. Please refer to the LANTITE page for more information.

LANTITE

All students must successfully complete the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) in order to graduate the course. Commencing students must attempt the LANTITE in their first year of study and both tests must be passed before the final Professional Experience Placement.

Year 2

Completion of 8 core subjects and 55 Days of Professional Experience placement (embedded within subjects marked *), and must have completed LANTITE

Award requirements

Satisfactory completion of 16 subjects, as required in the schedule, including 60 days Professional Placement, within 2-5 years from commencement.

The minimum entry requirements, for all students, is the completion of a Bachelor’s degree at an approved tertiary education institute. 

Additional pre-requisites: 

Primary teaching proficiency 

Your initial degree should contain at least one year of full-time equivalent study relevant to one or more learning area of the primary school curriculum as listed below.

Primary Proficiency area & Discipline Study:

• English: English studies (literature/textual) and may include studies in communications, creative writing, linguistics, media, or film.
• Humanities & Social Sciences: Humanities and social sciences with units drawn from Aboriginal studies, anthropology, archaeology, Asian or Pacific studies, business, civics, commerce, cultural studies, economics, geography, government, history, legal studies, outdoor and environmental education, philosophy, politics, psychology, religion studies, social communication and sociology.
• Mathematics: Pure or applied mathematics. Applicants with a Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Accounting can receive the mathematics proficiency.
• Science: Biology or chemistry or physics or environmental science, geology, nursing or medicine.
• The Arts: Visual arts, music, media art, theatre, or drama or dance.
• Health & Physical Education (HPE): Physical education studies, health studies, health promotion, human movement studies, nutrition, sports sciences.
• Languages: A single language including study of the spoken and written language.
• Technologies: Computing or computer technology, food science, architecture, design, fashion, engineering or construction.

An integral part of your learning in the Master of Teaching is the opportunity for classroom placements, where you’ll put into active practice the theory and knowledge you’ve gained throughout your degree.

You will participate in a minimum of 60 days of Professional Experience. These placements include 6 days in your first semester of study, and the remaining days are scheduled part time during your second year (if studying full time), or third and fourth years (if studying part time). You will then complete a four-week block placement, full time, in your final semester of study. 

Your placements are designed to help you become familiar with the Primary learning environments and how to teach. You’ll engage in active observation, participation, and be guided on how to teach.

Throughout your placement, you will be supervised and guided by a tertiary-qualified educator (your Colleague Teacher) and assessed against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
