On completion of the degree students will be able to:

Graduates of this degree will have the skills, knowledge and experience required to teach in K - 2 primary schools. Additional careers include education administrator or policy development officer.
This degree is recognised nationally as an initial pre-service teaching qualification. Initial Teacher Education degrees in Australia are accredited by the relevant authority in the state or territory in which the institution providing the qualification is based.
Accordingly, the Master of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) degree provided by Curtin University is fully accredited by the Teacher Registration Board of WA (TRBWA). This applies to the WA delivery of the degree and to the online delivery provided through Curtin's partnership with Open Universities Australia.
Graduates of this accredited degree are thus able to register as practising teachers with the registration body in their home state or territory, based on the degree accreditation provided by the TRBWA.
The degree is also recognised by the Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) as an approved early childhood teacher qualification.

Academic entrance requirements:
To be eligible for entry into the Master of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) applicants need to have completed a Bachelor Degree or its equivalent from a recognised tertiary institution with studies equivalent to at least one year FTE in an area relevant to Early Childhood curriculum.
Non-academic entrance requirements:
Teacher Capability Assessment Tool (TCAT)
All institutions in Australia that provide accredited Initial Teacher Education courses are required to administer a mechanism which assesses candidates' inherent suitability for teaching. The tool that Curtin University has selected to fulfil this requirement is the Teacher Capability Assessment Tool (TCAT). The TCAT is a web-based assessment tool and further information can be found at the following link: https://tcat.edu.au/. Please check your Curtin student email address for the notification from TCAT with the link to enable you to register for this online assessment. You are required to undertake the TCAT as soon as possible in your course and please be aware that you will not be able to enrol in the unit Professional Experience 3 unless your TCAT result has been recorded.

English Proficiency Requirements
Applicants need to meet Curtin’s English Language requirement as all courses are taught in English. If your education courses were not solely in English, as per the International Handbook of Universities or the World Higher Education database, please attach a scanned original copy of English Proficiency Test results.
Admission requires an overall International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic) score of 7.5, with no score below 7 in any of the four skill areas and a score of no less than 8 in speaking and listening. Alternatively, a score of level 4 in all four areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing on the International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR) assessment will be accepted. In both cases, the date of the assessment must be no more than 2 years prior to the date of the application.
If applicants are seeking course admission on the basis of any other tests of English competence, they will be considered on a case-by-case basis and admission cannot be assured.
Working with Children Clearances and Certifications
A current Working with Children clearance (as required in the state or country of residence) is compulsory.
Due to the specialist nature of the teaching profession, and the professional experience placements within this course, all successful applicants will be required to have a current Working with Children clearance and any other relevant State requirements before engaging in any professional placement. If students have any doubt about their eligibility to acquire these clearances they should contact the local Teacher Registration Authority.
Professional Experience Placements
All placements must be in a registered school and where the language of instruction is Australian Standard English. All students are required to successfully complete compulsory professional experience placements in schools as part of designated subjects throughout the degree.
Placements are undertaken on a full-time basis for the number of days shown in a continuous block and students need to plan carefully to ensure they are able to meet this commitment. The total number of days of professional experience in the degree will satisfy all states' requirements for teacher registration. No more than 25% of professional experience days may be undertaken in schools outside Australia. Therefore, students will only be able to complete one 3 week placement outside Australia and will be required to complete all other placements within Australia.
None of the four professional experience placements can be broken or split into shorter periods.
Note: The first professional experience subject requires placement in an Early Learning Centre comprising of a 1 day visit for 5 weeks immediately followed by a block of 10 consecutive days. The second and third professional experience subjects contain block placements of 15 consecutive days in two different school contexts and the fourth professional experience has 25 consecutive days in a third school.
Students require access to one accredited Early Learning Centre with infants and young children (Birth-2 years of age) and three schools in which to undertake their professional experience placements (and be able to travel to these educational settings).
In those circumstances where the student is having difficulty securing a placement, Curtin University staff will assist and will seek input from the student to identify possibilities before making direct contact with the school. Students having difficulty should contact Curtin in sufficient time to ensure that they are not disadvantaged due to their personal inability to identify a site for professional experience.
Further information about the professional experience placement requirements will be provided to students who have been admitted to the degree. Students who may seek to vary any of the stated conditions and requirements in the various professional experience subject handbooks must contact email@example.com prior to enrolling in the subject.
The final placement of 25 consecutive days is part of the final subject in the degree and cannot be undertaken until all other subjects and theoretical components have been successfully completed. Clearance will be given to commence the final professional experience placement pending results of final subjects.

Applications for Credit for Recognised Learning (CRL) are assessed on a case by case basis according to Curtin University policies which is available at http://policies.curtin.edu.au/local/docs/policy/Credit_for_Recognised_Learning_Manual.pdf.
Students must be admitted in an award degree of study before lodging their completed CRL application, along with all necessary documentation for a formal assessment.

This degree is designed for people seeking to attain an Initial Teacher Education qualification in order to register as a teacher in Australia and any other countries that recognise an Australian teaching qualification. Students in this degree will hold a degree in another discipline that contains some content relevant to the major chosen. Students will develop advanced critical skills, knowledge and understanding concerning best practice in education and in meeting the needs of 21st century learners. Graduates from this degree will be well-placed to enter leadership pathways in their teaching careers. Most subjects in this degree will be offered fully online, in order to provide more flexible access. Students will have four opportunities to engage in professional practice in schools, culminating in a final professional placement of 5 continuous weeks.
The Master of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) will be chosen by those who wish to teach in schools in K - 2, or who are seeking educator roles in Early Childhood Education and Care settings. This major encompasses children from birth - 8 years of age, and subjects studied will include management and leadership of Early Childhood Education and Care centres, as well as school curriculum and general pedagogical approaches. Professional experience placements will be completed by all students in this major across the full age range of birth-8 years.
Recommended Study Pattern
Students should check for prerequisites before enrolling in any subjects. Each of the Professional Experience subjects must be completed in order and there are pre-requisites for these subjects. For example, Professional Experience 1 and 2 are both pre-requisites for Professional Experience 3.
The standard full-time study load is two subjects per study period.

To qualify for the Master of Teaching (Early Childhood Education), students must successfully complete all core subjects. There are 16 subjects comprised of:
- coursework subjects
- units requiring professional experience block placements in school settings, including a final placement of 25 consecutive days
LANTITE Completion Requirement
Students are also required to provide evidence of successful completion of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education students (LANTITE) prior to enrolment in the Internship subject. The test is managed by ACER and details of the test (for example, sample questions, the Test Window dates, and registration) can be found at: https://teacheredtest.acer.edu.au/. Students are responsible for meeting the costs associated with taking these tests, which are a national requirement applicable to all teaching graduates.
Students must successfully complete all required subjects in the degree and the LANTITE prior to enrolling in the final professional experience subject.
