Master of Leadership and Management in Health Care
About this degree
On successful completion of the Master of Leadership and Management in Health Care graduates should be able to:
- LO1 Describe contemporary leadership and management strategies which can be applied within complex, dynamic healthcare environments to improve health outcomes
- LO2 Critically evaluate the effectiveness of various leadership and management models in terms of their suitability to meet demands of health care consumers, workforce and other healthcare providers in the context of local and international health care settings
- LO3 Apply theoretical knowledge to analyse and manage some of the challenges typically arising in the exercise of leadership and organisational management from the perspective of quality improvement and safety, workforce engagement and wellbeing, health care finance, the common good and corporate social responsibility
- LO4 Create ethical, theoretically-based strategies designed to lead and manage culturally safe, effective service delivery across a range of health care settings.
This course is designed to prepare ethical and effective health care leaders and managers who will be able to lead health service delivery into the future. The course has a strong focus on strategic organisational management, leading change in health service delivery, clinical redesign and in being a facilitative leader who is able to engage staff on developing innovative quality improvements.
This course will appeal to those who want to develop strong leadership and effective management skills that can be applied across a range of health care environments. The course is offered at master's level only, with exit options being the Graduate Certificate in Health Administration or the Graduate Diploma in Health Administration.
Recommended study pattern
Students are required to follow the pattern of unit enrolment set out in the relevant Course Enrolment Guide, unless otherwise approved by the Course Coordinator. In all aspects of progress through the course, students will be advised by the Course Coordinator.
To qualify for the degree, a student must complete 16 subjects from the Schedule of Unit Offerings, consisting of:
- 140 credit points from subjects -Specified Units;
- 20 credit points from subjects - Elective Units.

Exit points
A student who has completed the requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Health Administration or the Graduate Diploma in Health Administration may exit with the relevant award.

Entry requirements
An applicant must also comply with the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy.
To be eligible for admission to the Master of Leadership and Management in Health Care, an applicant must have completed either:
- the equivalent of an Australian bachelor’s degree in a health or human services related discipline; OR
- the equivalent of an Australian Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Health Administration; OR
- the equivalent of an Australian bachelor’s degree in any discipline and relevant work experience in a health or human services role
Academic IELTS with an overall score of 6.5: with minimum scores of 6.0 in all tests.
Pearson Test of English (PTE) 58: with a minimum of 50 in all four communicative skills
Test of English as a Foreign Language - Academic TOEFL Internet based total of 79: with a minimum 21 in writing, 18 in speaking, 13 in reading and 12 in listening
Cambridge Advanced English (CAE) Overall CAE of 176: with a minimum individual score of 169 in all tests.
International students need to meet the English Language Proficiency requirements as defined in the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy.
ACU will consider requests for advanced standing based on prior studies to a maximum equivalence of 8 subjects (80cp)
