Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Critically analyse clinical safety and quality in healthcare
- Critique and communicate safety and quality issues related to the delivery of health services considering social, environmental, political and economic factors
- Analyse foundational and contemporary health service management theory, principles and processes, and reflect on their efficacy in current practice
The Graduate Certificate in Health Service Management (Safety and Quality), developed and delivered by the Australian Institute of Health Service Management.
The overall purpose of the Graduate Certificate in Health Service Management (Safety and Quality) course is to develop graduates who have in-depth understanding and practical application of the National Model Clinical Governance Framework and National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards (NSQHSS). The course provides the knowledge and competencies for students to review the overarching National Model Clinical Governance Framework to determine appropriate systems for governance, accountability and transparency to meet the health industry needs. Students will also review their organisational management requirements and clinical systems for effectiveness.
The units are developed in collaboration with industry to reflect industry practices and to develop graduates to meet workforce shortages and demands. Graduates will be able to apply critical, technical and creative skills to making ethical and social decisions and judgements in complex health information setting. A blended learning approach enables students to engage with local and national leaders, and partake in actual industry assessments strategies, including data analysis, case studies and projects.
Articulation into further study in the Master of Health Service Management is possible on completion of the Graduate Certificate.
The Graduate Certificate award has been created and specified in the Australian Qualifications Framework as part of the Federal Government’s response to COVID-19. These courses are currently only available to students in 2020-2021. Students who enrol in but not are able to complete their Graduate Certificate in 2021 will be supported to transfer into alternative courses of study in the Australian Institute of Health Service Management.

Australian Bachelor Degree or equivalent level standard in any other institution in an unrelated discipline and a minimum of one year relevant work experience in the health sector
Work and Life
A minimum of five years approved relevant work experience in the health sector or other special circumstances (e.g. post-secondary qualifications) as approved by the Dean or delegated authority.

In this course, you'll gain the knowledge, analysis skills and practical competencies through using the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards and National Model Clinical Governance Framework as the focus for study. The underlying theories and models, purpose, evidence for, application and systems to review each of the standards will be investigated. You'll also get opportunities to engage with Australian experts and participate in industry case studies and analysis.
The Graduate Certificate in Health Service Management (Safety and Quality) is offered on a part-time basis.

- TAS-BAA544 The Science and Practice of Clinical Safety and Quality and Accountability 1
- TAS-BAA545 The Science and Practice of Clinical Safety and Quality and Accountability 2
- TAS-BAA546 Principles and Models for Engagement with Consumers in Health Care
Satisfactory completion of 4 subjects, as required in the schedule to be eligible for this award
