Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice

Postgraduate studies in criminology and criminal justice provide a pathway to professional advancement for those working in these fields. The degrees are designed to provide an overview of criminological theory and research, the workings of the criminal justice system and allied organisations, insight into key policy debates and an understanding of research methods.
The degrees introduce social and psychological explanations of crime, as well as contemporary debates in criminological theory. Beyond the core elements of the degree in policing, community development, crime prevention, law and behaviour and social science research methods you will have the opportunity to study electives from criminal justice, research practice, policing, corrections and crime prevention.

Graduate Certificate in Criminology and Criminal Justice

This program meets one of the knowledge requirements of becoming a registered Migration Agent in Australia. The Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA) recognises Griffith University as a provider of the Graduate Diploma of Australian Migration Law and Practice. Applicants intending to register should also ensure they meet OMARA requirements for registration. Only Australian citizens (or those holding permanent resident visas) can register with OMARA.Our courses are specifically designed to equip emerging migration agents to meet the Occupational Competency Standards for Registered Migration Agents. Graduates are equipped with a broad range of knowledge about the theoretical and practical aspects required to succeed in this occupation. Our program and course design, as well as our online capstone preparation module are important components in supporting students as part of their own study for the independent capstone exam (see OMARA website for details).As a registered Migration Agent, there are a range of opportunities to specialise in certain areas or assist clients with a broad range of important work.Registered Migration Agents have a great deal of career flexibility, with the ability to work in large corporate settings, or to run their own sole trader business from home.This program is open both to lawyers and to those without a legal background - specifically those who wish to become a registered migration agent . As a currently registered migration agent wishing to complete the program, you should also note that it will provide credit towards Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements. The program may also offer credit to lawyers for CPD. You should check with the relevant law society in this regard.This program is also suitable for people working in industries where having knowledge of migration law is important, including accountants, engineers, ICT professionals and paralegals.Note: Graduates of this award intending to apply to the <a href="https://www.mara.gov.au/" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA)</a> for registration as a Migration Agent must also pass a separate capstone exam. OMARA will provide details of this separate requirement on its website.

The Master of Financial Crime Investigation and Compliance will equip you with the knowledge you need to ensure compliance with various local and global regulations, as well as the tools you need to investigate inappropriate or illegal use of funds.This program is offered full-time and part-time at Nathan and Online in Trimester 1 and Trimester 2. With some courses also available at other campuses, you may choose to study a combination of online and on-campus.

Tackle illegal use of funds transnationally. Topics include forensic accounting and cyber security. You’ll build skills in risk management and governance. Stay on top of the changing regulatory environment. Lead organisations to manage cyber fraud risks.

Master of Financial Crime Investigation and Compliance

Through a combination of cutting-edge course content, practical workshops, and interaction with industry, you&#39;ll develop a deep understanding of energy policy, economics, technology, and sustainability so you can make an impact on the changing energy landscape.  If you&#39;re looking for a degree that will help you to break into a career in the energy sector, or if you&#39;re in the industry and are wanting to upskill, the Master of Energy Policy will provide you with the transferable skills you&#39;ll need. This program explores the multifaceted dimensions of energy policy, including policy analysis, energy economics, renewable technologies and energy security. You&#39;ll explore the intersection of energy policy with environmental sustainability and the need to develop new systems and mindsets in process of transitioning to renewables. Some courses will include optional in-person workshops and discussions. Master of Energy Policy

This double degree combines criminology and criminal justice practices in addressing crime and its causes, as well as in-demand business skills incorporating adaptivity, creativity, diversity and sustainable business practices. From first year onwards you&#39;ll be given practical skills to increase your employability through internships, mentoring, and workshops, and in your second and third years you&#39;ll choose a business major and narrow your focus into a key area of criminology and criminal justice, based on your interests and desired career. You&#39;ll develop valuable analytical skills, honing your ability to assess market trends, formulate effective business strategies, and navigate the complexities of the corporate world. At the same time, you&#39;ll learn about the current trends in crime in Australia and overseas. Academic and professional experts will explain proven ways that crime can be examined, prevented and reduced. You&#39;ll participate in courses that include the police, courts and criminal law, forensic psychology and homicide.  Both your business and criminology skills will be founded in principles to ensure you have a positive impact on communities and the environment, locally or globally, both for now and into the future.This degree is offered full-time and part-time at the Nathan/Mt Gravatt and Gold Coast campuses and online. You may choose to study courses on-campus, online or a combination of modes to suit your requirements. You may also choose to study courses at other campuses if or where the program structure allows.As a full-time student, you will generally attend 12-15 hours of scheduled classes per week throughout the trimester. Despite the public&#39;s obsession with crime, victimisation and criminal justice, despite the morbid fear that crime and victimisation arouses, despite the endless volumes written to account for offending, victimisation and criminal justice processing, gender, the most powerful social factor of all has been virtually ignored by criminologists.&quot; (Leonard, 1982). This course explores the persistent and profound differences women and men&#39;s experiences of crime. The course considers how gender intersects with other social categories such as race, class, socioeconomic status, and ethnicity to shape crime and responses to it.

Seek to explain the profound differences between genders in crime rates, patterns, victimisation, and criminal justice system experiences and responses. Then consider intersections between gender, Indigeneity, class and sexual orientation.

Gender, Crime and Justice

This subject examines the origins and development of corrective services in Australia. The correctional system is studied in terms of custodial and non-custodial sanctions, and considers special client populations including men, women, juveniles and Indigenous offenders. The issues of privatisation and deaths in custody are examined.This subject provides an introduction to the corrections system in Australia, exploring the evolution and current state of corrective services through the lenses of principles, policies, and practices. Students will learn about the history and foundations of the corrections system, staff and client experiences in custodial and community corrections, and contemporary issues in corrections.Assessment details will be advised at the beginning of the subject offering.

Introduction to Corrections

This subject introduces students to the law relating to financial products, financial markets, lending and other finance related activities of Australian banks and other financial institutions in the private sector. Topics covered include the Australian financial system; the relationship between lender and borrower; the statutory regulation of credit; loans to differing forms of business organisations; consumer credit - including Consumer Credit Code, EFT Code of Conduct, payment system and mechanisms, Managed Investment Schemes: real and personal property and the law and enforcement of securities and consequent remedies through the courts/tribunals as well as alternative dispute resolution methods. Prerequisites: AFE215 Introduction to Business Law. Students should not enrol in this subject if they have previously completed 3105AFE: Law of Finance at Griffith University.
