This degree is designed to provide students with basic skills and knowledge in a range of disciplinary studies in the humanities, arts and social sciences. The Diploma in Arts examines historic, environmental, social, behavioural and cultural features of humanity, allowing students to analyse, reflect upon and anticipate patterns of human conduct. Students will develop creative, critical and analytical skills to assist with future employment or to pursue further study.
The Diploma in Arts is an attractive option for students who would prefer to trial university study while gaining an introductory undergraduate qualification.
The Diploma in Arts provides students with a broad range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary studies from across the University, with a basic focus on aspects of human culture and achievement.
The degree aims to provide students with:
(i) an introductory knowledge in their chosen areas of study;
(ii) the ability to apply the knowledge they have acquired;
(iii) the ability to communicate effectively in a range of ways;
(iv) creative, critical and analytical skills;
(v) the ability to work both independently and collaboratively;

Diploma in Arts

This subject aims to develop your knowledge of Europe between the fall of the Roman Empire in the fifth century to the dawn of the Renaissance in the fifteenth century. You will learn about the development of Christianity and the violent and bitter struggles between the Church and secular rulers, through to the evolution of social institutions, the world of crusaders, dissenters, the prominence of visual culture, medieval mentalities, law, popular culture and beliefs, along with the relations between ordinary people and power. In doing so, you will develop an understanding of the context for emerging modernity and develop your critical thinking and analysis skills.

Medieval Europe

History is one of the world’s oldest academic and popular disciplines. This foundational unit introduces you to its origins, current state and future. You will explore the &#39;history of history&#39;, examining its foundations in the ancient world, the development of medieval and early modern conceptions of history, as well as history in its many modern forms. The subject also considers non-Western conceptions of history and explores some of the key questions and debates over the nature of history itself. These include questions about history as an empirical discipline or social science, history as a narrative of progress, history as fiction, history as national epic, history as class struggle, history as the lives of great humans and the &#39;end&#39; of history. As such, this subject aims to help you develop a deeper and more critical understanding of history as a discipline.

What is History?

This subject provides you with a well-rounded exploration of Ancient Rome, from its rise to power on the international stage to the death of Julius Caesar in 44 BC. Emphasis is placed on the literary and material evidence that survives for this period, and the analytical skills historians use to interpret that evidence. You will gain insights into the significant issues of Roman Republican history and deepen your understanding and interpretation of human behaviour in a historically different context. Additionally, you will develop your basic research skills and your ability to apply critical analysis to ancient evidence.

Introduction to Ancient Rome

This subject examines the development of our attitudes and approaches to law and order through a study of some of the most infamous crimes and criminals in the British world between 1700 and 1900. You will consider a series of case studies ranging broadly over space and time, from both historical and criminological perspectives. This will reveal both changing patterns of deviance and criminal behaviour and the evolving efforts to regulate and prevent it. As such, you will learn how to find, use and evaluate evidence about crime and use it to deepen your understanding of the development of modern society.

Being Bad: Sinners, Crooks, Deviants and Psychos

This subject introduces you to the history and culture of the two leading centres of the classical Greek world: Athens and Sparta. It considers a wide variety of aspects of their society and political structure and provides you with an exemplary in-depth study of political events from the archaic through to the classical periods (ca. 600 to 390 BCE). You will explore various topics, including the society and culture of both cities, the development and practice of democratic government in Athens, the Spartan constitution and military ethos, the Persian Wars, Athenian imperialism in the fifth century, and the Spartan victory over Athens in the Peloponnesian War and the rise and fall of the Spartan hegemony. Emphasis is placed on literary as well as material sources of information, to ensure you gain a broad range of knowledge and a well-rounded understanding of ancient Greek society and history as exemplified in its leading cities. The subject also provides you with the opportunity to develop a first level of historical critical thinking and evaluation skills.

From Solon to Socrates

This subject will deepen your understanding of the history of Europe from the start of the Reformation in 1517 to the French Revolution in 1789. In this period, Europe underwent profound transformations. The hegemony of the Catholic Church was challenged by the Protestant Reformation, which tore Europe apart as great dynasties and proto-nations fought for religious and political supremacy. European colonial empires were established in the Americas, Africa and Asia, revolutionising the world economy. Finally, the Enlightenment and Scientific Revolution decisively altered the intellectual landscape of the Western World. Europe as we know it today was moulded by the momentous events of this period. The subject will challenge you to think critically about a range of key events and issues during this fascinating historical period. This subject complements the knowledge gained in HIST111 but can also be studied as a standalone subject.

Early Modern Europe: From Reformation to Revolution

What constitutes an historical work and makes someone a historian? Behind every work of history there is a person with a determined interest and motivation in presenting and interpreting a historical account of the past. As E. H. Carr argued in &#39;What is History (1961)&#39;, study the historian and the societies they have come from, before studying the histories they have produced. In this subject you will tackle these and other questions about the discipline of historical inquiry. By exploring the changing nature of history and the work of selected historians, you will uncover the different ways in which they have approached the task of writing history, and the various formats they have used in presenting it. The subject also develops your critical understanding of historians, and the societal and cultural changes that underpin their work.

The Historian

This subject provides the building blocks for you to learn about the practice, method and theories, history, and achievements of archaeology. Through lectures and practical sessions, it prepares you for the in-depth critical study of the archaeology of any region or time. With a focus on the specialised knowledge, skills and underlying concepts used by archaeologists, this subject covers a broad range of topics involved in studying the past. You will explore the nature and aims of archaeology, the history of the discipline, types of evidence and their recovery, dating, the scope of archaeological enquiry, the place of archaeology in contemporary life, and the ethics of archaeology regarding the present and the past.

Archaeology: Principles and Practices

Western popular music has developed alongside social movements and youth cultures which have challenged the political order and been used to assert new modes of identity. In this subject you will work through an historical survey of Western popular music from the 1950s to the present day, paying particular attention to how popular music genres have developed within shifting social upheavals, technological innovations, and evolving consumer cultures. You will progress through listening, contextualisation and analysis exercises of popular music genres including rock, pop, folk, hip hop, dance and electronica. Subject learning activities will encourage you to evaluate how popular music has challenged historical music literacies and expanded experiences of music of the last and present century.

Popular Music

This subject introduces you to the manifold facets of the Italian Renaissance. You will explore the intellectual developments and the unprecedented advances in the fields of art, architecture, science, literature and technology.  The subject adopts an interdisciplinary approach and analyses literary texts in translation, documentary sources, and visual and material culture outputs. You will have the opportunity to develop a topic of interest  using a wide range of mediums. You will also gain an all-round knowledge and understanding of the Italian Renaissance and its legacy throughout time.
