Language is what makes us human. It influences our thoughts and affects our lives in even more ways that we might expect. In this advanced subject, students are introduced to the most important and strongly debated issues in the psychology of language. Lecture topics include the distinctive features of human language as a system of communication, language structure, acquisition and development, the understanding and production of speech (and what happens when these processes go wrong), the development of reading and spelling, and how the social and cultural environment can influence how language is used.

Psychology of Language

The subject will focus on further study of Latin grammar (morphology and syntax), such as the uses of the moods and tenses of the verb, further uses of the cases, and the introduction of the passive voice. We will also discuss further cultural phenomena (e.g. Cicero, Verres, oratory; the Roman system of government during the late Republic). This subject extends the skills developed in the first semester of Latin study. It brings students closer to reading Latin authors in the original language. It will be sharpen students philological and critical skills, which can usefully be applied in contexts other than classical study (e.g. in the study of other languages, of philosophy, literature and history).

Latin 1B

This subject is intended for students who have no previous knowledge of Latin. The subject is designed to provide a rapid survey of the language sufficient to enable students to read selected passages of adapted and original Latin. This subject is taught in blended mode, involving seminar-format learning and a variety of online activities, including videos, short quizzes, and online games. The language is taught in the context of its historical and cultural background, and includes study of the influence of Latin on the development of English and other modern languages.

This is an introductory subject for students with no prior knowledge of Indonesian. This subject will provide students with the skills to communicate and interact with Indonesian people on a range of topics, to find their way around in Indonesia, and to understand basic information written in Indonesian. It provides the foundation for an understanding of Indonesian culture and society norms, through situating the use of the Indonesian language in relevant social and cultural contexts. Learning the Indonesian language, even as a beginner, cannot be separated from learning the cultural significance in Indonesia of taboos, gestures, the concept of time, and etiquette, all of which are markedly different from Australian cultural norms.

Develops competence in basic spoken and written Japanese. This subject builds on the work you learned in HMJ101. This subject, the second half of introductory Japanese, develops competence in basic spoken and written skills with an emphasis on the interactive use of the language.

Introduction to Japanese 1B

This is an introductory subject for students with little or no prior knowledge of Japanese. This subject has an emphasis on the interactive use of the Japanese language. It develops competence in basic spoken and written Japanese. The subject also provides a competence base in grammatical knowledge and oral/aural skills from which students can proceed to HMJ102. While a key goal of this subject is the acquisition of communication skills in Japanese, the subject also provides the basic knowledge of cross-cultural communication by exploring the linguistic and cultural differences between English and Japanese.

This is an introductory subject for students with little or no prior knowledge of Chinese. This introductory subject is for anyone who is interested in the Chinese language and/or has the need to learn Chinese for business or academic purposes. This subject provides an introduction to all four basic language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing. It provides students with opportunities to establish essential communicative skills with a focus on practical, everyday use of the Chinese language and incorporating some socio-cultural knowledge. Selected topics and situations, such as exchanging personal information, asking about directions and telling your hobbies etc., all come from real life scenarios. There is no prerequisite required for this introductory subject.

If you are just starting out with the German language or you’re picking it back up as a refresher, then this is the right subject for you. Our goal is to not only learn how to communicate in German, but also to focus on gaining independence in language acquisition by developing an understanding of how the language works. You’ll engage with a sequenced study of its basic building blocks that is supported by our popular Bausteine eins YouTube series and our own textbook, which together cover everything you need to know at an Introductory level. In particular, you’ll concentrate on developing the individual vocabulary of words, phrases and structures you need to help you communicate authentically with others about your life and interests.

This subject investigates the links between language and culture, and the importance of considering and analysing the linguistic and cultural differences of learners within any learning and teaching context. In particular, you will explore three main themes. Firstly, you will look at the interdependence of language and culture. Secondly, you will investigate how linguistic and cultural differences can affect how people learn. Thirdly, you will look at the challenges and opportunities presented by intercultural communication in today&#39;s globalised world. You will be required to analyse a school-based scenario and provide recommendations on how best to facilitate intercultural communication.
