Graduate Certificate of Public Policy

The Master of Environmental Management and Development will boost your career in natural resource management and environmental policy, and improve your professional ability to respond to the complex challenges of sustainable development.Offered by the internationally-renowned Crawford School, the program will equip you with the theoretical understanding and practical skills you need to contribute to the goals of economic viability, social acceptability and environmental sustainability in different social and political contexts.Focus areas include biodiversity conservation, food security, climate change, social impacts, environmental governance, and management of primary resources such as water, fisheries, forests, and minerals. Master of Environmental Management and Development

Do you want to tackle one of the most important and complex environmental problems encountered by humankind? The ANU Master of Climate Change program offers significant breadth and depth of study in climate change science and policy, including economics, law, policy and governance aspects. You can develop a unique program of advanced learning suited to your individual background, interests, and career goals.This degree covers a core syllabus of climate impacts, adaptation, mitigation, climate change economics and policy including methodological approaches and practical application to current issues. It is taught by some of Australia’s leading experts in climate change analysis. A wide range of elective courses from across ANU is also available. Credit and exemptions may be given for prior study and work experience, including to the pre-sessional program.

Master of Climate Change

This specialisation provides students with deep and comprehensive understanding of the nature and challenges of social policy within nations and globally. Multidisciplinary in nature, this specialisation will provide insight into key theories, principles and approaches, providing a foundation for social policy analysis, development and implementation across a range of contexts. The social policy specialisation equips students with an understanding of the key actors engaged in social policy making – including the growing influence of ‘non-traditional’ actors. Through electives, students in this specialisation can explore a wide range of issues relevant to social policy development and implementation, such as the boundaries of social policy; influences on social policy, including demographic and labour force trends; how social policy intersects with other aspects of government policy; and debates about financing of welfare programmes, inequality and income distribution, wellbeing and social justice, in Australia and internationally. This specialisation offers opportunities for advanced investigation of the analytical skills, public policies and organisational practices appropriate for advising on social policy and managing program outcomes. It is well-suited for those in social policy development and/or implementation in government and non-government sectors.

Master of Public Policy: Social Policy Specialisation

The Master of Regulation and Governance (MREGG) is a unique degree that equips students and their organisations to navigate environments where complexity, catastrophic risk, and transformative technologies are reshaping the ways in which we govern and regulate. Graduates from this program will be working in - or will join - government or private sector organisations charged with designing and applying regulatory policy solutions to pressing social problems, often in partnership with diverse stakeholders. Core courses provide students with a solid foundation in the concepts, processes, institutions and practice of regulation and governance. Elective courses provide case-studies, simulations and clinics in which to examine domains such as climate, crime, environment, health, Indigenous Australia, justice, safety, technology and urban design. All the courses are interactive and ask how regulation and governance is created and by whom - and for what purpose, with an emphasis on how to better anticipate catastrophe, manage risk and provide equitable social outcomes. Master of Regulation and Governance

Offered by the internationally-renowned Crawford School of Public Policy, this program examines the processes, institutions and practices of public policy. In the first year students undertaking Introductory Arabic 1 and Introductory Arabic 2 develop basic competences in both written and oral grammatical patterns, both orally and in writing, using Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), and learn to interact in limited aspects of everyday life situations. Emphasis at this stage is on mastering the Arabic sound system and pronunciation. This course assumes no previous knowledge of the language. It covers the Arabic script, sound system and basic grammar rules. The teaching uses a new method of audio-visual and audio-lingual approach and is designed to develop the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing by the use of dialogues, class interaction and oral and written drills. Language laboratory work may be incorporated into the course. On completion of the course, students will have acquired the ability to speak at a basic level in Modern Standard Arabic, the ability to read and understand a range of simple Arabic texts within a vocabulary range of 300-400 most commonly used words, basic grammatical structures of the Arabic language and familiarity with some Arabic cultural practices and traditions.

This introductory course introduces students to spoken and written Thai. In this course, students will learn the tones, consonants, vowels, essential grammar, polite particles, and the writing system of the Thai language. Students will also have the opportunity to learn a range of simple sentence patterns. They will learn to read and write basic sentences which will enable them to use the language in day-to-day situations. The course covers basic knowledge of Thailand, greetings, self and family, time and date, describing things around you, and asking for help, information, and directions. Cultural issues in relation to language use and politeness will also be included.This is a fast paced academic course at a University level, Via face-to-face video at a set time prescribed by the University. Please be aware of potential time zone differences.

This course aims to further develop students&#39; reading, writing, listening and speaking skills towards becoming independent users of Turkish language. Each week, students will explore the defining events and characteristics of a decade in Turkey from the 1920s to 2010s through film, literature, music and arts. Students will gain a deeper understanding of Turkish culture and society while developing the skills express opinions and ideas. The students will be expected to complete online study modules weekly before attending the online live session.

Intermediate Turkish B

This course continues on from Elementary Turkish B and corresponds to the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. This course will further develop students&#39; reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills to equip them to deal with most situations that may arise in a Turkish-speaking environment. Students will gain insights into Turkish society and culture through the study of a range of media. The students will be expected to complete online study modules weekly before attending the online live session.

Intermediate Turkish A

The Intensive Functional Persian Language Course is developed to build fundamental language skills required for an Advanced Targeted Proficiency Level. This course provides a systematic learning program that enables learners to communicate effectively using the language at a high level and in a range of different functions such as everyday activities and present/future professional work. The course covers four language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing and translation. Apart from covering the key grammatical points, formal and informal vocabulary and fixed key phrases, the course also encompasses sociolinguistic and sociocultural aspects of the Persian Language and provides an introduction to press and media. The course is based on a platform of a communicative language and enables correct and appropriate interaction in a given context, from everyday practical and social language to formal specific situations.

Advanced Functional Persian

This course focuses on the analysis and translation of intermediate texts from various periods. Based on the knowledge acquired in Literary Chinese 1, the course attempts to improve the students’ proficiency in philological translation with a sample of different types of text. To meet the challenges posed by the selected texts, the course further introduces Sinological reference tools useful for their elucidation.

Literary Chinese 2

An introduction to contemporary spoken and written Vietnamese. This subject introduces the tones, essential syntax and the writing system of the Vietnamese language. By working through a series of graded and contextualised dialogues the students will begin to develop reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. The context of language use includes greetings, the individual, the family, time and date. Attention is given to the social and cultural context of language use. Vietnamese is spoken by more than 90 million people in Vietnam. It is also the native language of nearly 4 million people residing overseas; it is the sixth most‐spoken language in Australia. Study of Vietnamese will put students in a unique position to enter Vietnamese‐speaking environment and to gain a deep understanding of its rich culture, friendly people, and vibrant society.

Hold conversations in Australia’s sixth most-spoken language. Distinguish and pronounce the six tones that are used to build words. Experience the Vietnamese language in the context of the country’s cultural and social communication practices.

Tok Pisin is an official language of Papua New Guinea, and is the most commonly and widely used language in the country with approximately 4 million native speakers. By learning Tok Pisin, students will gain a deeper understanding of the rich cultures, histories and societies of the people of Papua New Guinea and surrounding areas of the Pacific.
In this introductory course, students will gain a practical command of beginner spoken Tok Pisin, and an elementary capacity to read various types of texts in Tok Pisin with the help of a dictionary. By the end of the course, students should have an active vocabulary of approximately 1000 of the most frequently used and useful words in Tok Pisin. Students will have covered the main features in a grammar of Tok Pisin, and will have a command of the pronunciation of the language.

Tetum is the language of Timor-Leste. The study of Tetum is essential for anyone wishing to understand Timor-Leste&#39;s diverse society, vibrant culture and dynamic history. Timor-Leste is a close neighbour of Australia and ties between these two countries are increasing through bilateral initiatives and international security, trade and development projects.Tetum is a spoken language, because prior to independence in 2002 most Timorese did not have access to education and literacy rates was low. Reading and writing in Tetum is mainly to give students a strong foundation in speaking skills, and the emphasis in the course will be developing oral skills because Tetum is primarily an oral language.The ANU offers a rare opportunity to complete a minor in Tetum. Students completing a minor in Tetum will be uniquely placed to engage with the Timorese people, state, and society. Communications skills in Tetum will facilitate future opportunities in Immigration andCustoms, Hospitality, Travel and Tourism, Commercial Import/Exports or in the broad ranging Aid sectors, or, to work as a professional translator/interpreter.The four courses needed to complete the minor are only offered online so can be studied from any location, but classes will be delivered on a weekly basis throughout the semester comprising of three-hour session a week. Students who complete this language minor will reach an Intermediate level of Tetum skills and knowledge. In this introductory course, students will gain a practical command of beginner spoken Tetum, and an elementary capacity to read Tetum newspaper articles with the help of a dictionary.By the end of the course, students should have an active vocabulary of approximately 1000 of the most frequently used and useful words in Tetum. Immerse yourself in the official language of Timor-Leste. Flick through newspaper articles written in Tetum. Work on pronunciation and intonation. Assemble the fundamental language building blocks that allow you to discuss food, clothes and homes.

This course builds on the previous course, Vietnamese 1. The course focuses on practical and essential topics of everyday language use such as asking for directions, traveling, planning a trip, distances and modes of transport, shopping and bargaining, and talking about one&#39;s future plans. The course covers important grammatical topics such as tenses, usage of conjunctions, and more complex particles. Attention is given to the social and cultural context of language use. As students’ vocabulary and grammatical repertoire expands, Vietnamese learning at this stage is exciting and delightful. Even with limited Vietnamese, students might be amazed at how much they can express their ideas or tell their stories using simple language.  This is a fast paced academic course at a University level.

Extend your Vietnamese while you develop a deeper understanding of the culture of Vietnam and social etiquette for travel. Begin to have conversations, including making comparisons, talking about direction and distances, and using complex particles.
