In this subject, you will focus on the scope, aims and techniques of sport and exercise psychology. The scope of sport psychology includes: its importance in changing community health behaviours; working with special groups such as disabled persons, elite athletes, and non-sport performers (for example, dancers), older populations, and individuals undergoing rehabilitation. The aim of sport psychology should not be limited to winning, but should be oriented to achieving personal goals, whether they be improving performance, fitness and health, or simply increasing enjoyment. Techniques include the use of cognitive-behavioural techniques to increase motivation, reduce competition anxiety, improve concentration, enhance teamwork, and manage stressors outside of the sport area (for example, work, study, family).This subject is designed for third-year students. To maximise your chances of success in achieving the intended learning outcomes, it is recommended that you complete this subject in your third- year.

Sport and Exercise Psychology

Exercise and Healthy Living investigates how physical activity and health lifestyle choices are important across the lifespan focusing particularly on strategies used to prolong physical activity involvement as we age. Current health statistics are examined, which for varying groups of Australians can influence the implications and promotion of health strategies in the community. Successful health promotion initiatives encouraging healthy lifestyles are explored as are partnerships within community groups, government and non-government sectors in this area.

Exercise and Healthy Living

Sport, games, and play are a part of everyday life. Formal or informal, solitary or shared, physical or virtual, organised or spontaneous, high stakes or &#39;just for fun&#39;, games are a means of escaping the ‘real’ world or exploring it in new ways. Our shared values can be demonstrated through play, either by celebrating those we deem to be ‘good sports’ or shaming those who don’t play ‘in the spirit of the game’. But how are these norms of ‘fair play’ shaped, by whom, and how can they change over time? How can urban sports such as skateboarding and parkour be seen as ‘subversive’ and framed as a public menace, and yet offer opportunities for personal expression and communal belonging? How are video games shaping new understandings of both fun and competitive interactions, and how are e-sports influencing the future of play?Meanwhile, more ‘traditional’ forms of sport are undoubtedly among the most influential in Australian society. No less than three Australian Test cricket captains and tennis players have been recognised as Australian of the Year. Prime Ministers and other political leaders desperately promote their support of popular teams to make themselves relatable, and Victoria has not one, but two public holidays dedicated solely to sporting events. But why is this the case? Why does sport seem to possess such an enormous influence in Australian society? Sport can unite us and foster community-building, but it can also divide us through forms of exclusion based on race, gender, sexuality, faith, age, and class. In short, sport may claim to be ‘fair’ while in reality proving ‘foul’. In this subject, we address debates around sports and games and explore how forms of play can create welcoming social spaces.This is an online, entirely asynchronous subject, meaning there are no live lectures or tutorials. Instead students can work through the varied, engaging, and highly topical content on their own schedules (while, of course, keeping in mind the assessment deadlines). In 2026 this subject will commence on January 5 and end around February 20. However, it is possible to submit the final assessment prior to the deadline and complete the subject earlier.

The Politics of Play: Contemporary Issues in Sports, Games, and Leisure

In this subject you will learn the essentials of human nutrition that improve and sustain optimal performance for sport and exercise for athletes and active individuals. This subject will cover topics including assessment of energy needs, dietary intake and body composition in athletes; training and competition nutrition, sports foods and supplements; nutrition for specific sports and life stages and current issues in sports nutrition.

Weigh up the nutritional demands of athletes. Isolate nutrition’s role in muscle gain or fat loss and optimising performance. Tackle subjects like sports supplements, fluid intake and the nutritional challenges that can affect older active individuals.

Nutrition for Sports Performance

This subject was previously known as EDP383 Health and Physical Education.
This subject introduces students to health and physical education in the contemporary Australian primary school curriculum, where emphasis is on developing children’s health and physical literacies within safe and lifelong learning frameworks so they are able to flourish as healthy and active citizens. With attention to diversity and social justice, children’s rights to develop health and physical literacies within their personal, physical and socio-cultural contexts are explored, and relevant teaching approaches identified. Given the emphasis on evidence-based curriculum design, students will investigate the research that underpins the contemporary curriculum rationale and focus.
This subject reviews ongoing, developmentally appropriate and explicit teaching about health and movement, where children participate safely to develop the knowledge, skills, dispositions and understandings to make healthy and active choices for the wellbeing of themselves and others. In this regard, the importance of physical skills in the early childhood years, including observation and practise of fundamental motor skills (FMS), assessment of FMS and appropriate interventions, is addressed. Advanced movement skills and strategies, components of personal, social and community health, fitness, spatial awareness and games-based teaching models are also explored.

Health and Physical Education

This subject will enable students to learn how to write an individualised exercise program to meet those needs. Students will be shown the fundamentals of exercise prescription and delivery to provide a basic program for healthy individuals. Concepts of progression and program modification will be identified.

Fundamentals of Exercise Programming

This subject will enable students to develop knowledge of the battery of anthropometric and physical tests available for human performance assessment, as well as performing health risk screening and appraisal techniques specific to exercise programmes for healthy individuals. These include measures of strength, endurance, sub maximal and maximal fitness testing and athlete profiling. Students will be able to identify which assessments are required for individuals with different exercise goals in the promotion of health and fitness.

Health and Exercise Performance Testing

As a result of a global interest in sports, both on and off the field, there is a demand for skilled professionals with a practical understanding of sports-related legal matters. Studying this subject equips you with a specialised knowledge in a range of contemporary legal issues associated with sport, as well as critical thinking skills about policy and society at large. You will develop advanced knowledge in a range of legal issues relating to sport in Australia, including aspects of international interest. As well as gaining valuable skills in the critical evaluation of how sport and the law interact, you will explore of a range of emerging sports law issues and the future directions governing sports law. Sports Law

Childhood development occurs on a continuum, with rapid physical, social, emotional and cognitive change occurring in primary school-aged children. In this subject, you will explore the fundamentals of curriculum theory and teaching in the Health and Physical Education (HPE) component of the primary school curriculum. Engaging in a variety of learning experiences, you will examine the theoretical and practical aspects of this key learning area, with different approaches to learning and recognition of the needs of students of differing abilities. This subject provides you with opportunities to explore current research-based knowledge for teaching movement skills and demonstrate your knowledge of teaching and assessment strategies, class management and organisation skills for safe HPE teaching. You will also critique, design and implement lesson sequences that integrate diverse approaches to K-6 HPE teaching and learning.
