This subject builds on the knowledge of pedagogies appropriate for teaching primary mathematics that students acquired in EMT521 Teaching Primary Mathematics 1. The second subject in the sequence, EMT620 broadens students understanding of mathematics pedagogy by addressing the content and practices not covered in the initial subject. This subject will model and provide opportunities for students to engage with best pedagogical practice by undertaking rich tasks, group work, and problem solving, as well as differentiating and integrating the curriculum. Students will enhance their understanding of appropriate pedagogies for teaching mathematics and their knowledge of relevant curricula, the development of students&#39; thinking in each of the strands of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics, and the relationship of content knowledge to pedagogy. It will provide pre-service teachers with opportunities to assess primary students&#39; mathematical thinking using work samples and to develop their skills in planning for teaching based on this information.

Teaching Primary Mathematics 2

The subject will explore the nature of inclusive education in the 21st century with an emphasis on diversity and exceptionality. Based on a philosophical foundation that values every student and acknowledges the right of every student to the most appropriate educational opportunities, this subject involves independently researching and analysing the complex theoretical and practical issues associated with effective inclusive education. You will be required to develop an advanced and integrated understanding of learning and teaching approaches to suit the diverse educational needs of students. You will build on your understanding of theories of human development and learning in relation to student diversity and exceptionality, applying planning models to include all students.

Inclusive Practices in Education Settings

This subject is a theoretical and practical exploration of ethics in relation to education and teacher identity. It encourages you to consider how particular philosophical ideas inform educational values, how they relate to your identity as a teacher, and how they might be articulated in your own teaching practice. You will think critically and creatively about these ideas and evaluate their impact on educational practices, including those explored in previous and subsequent subjects. The subject&#39;s rationale is that your teaching practice is strongly informed by your ethical stance on education, children, and professionalism, and the practical implications that flow from this, taking into account key professional and legislative imperatives. The subject focuses on three integrated areas: (1) the development of critical reasoning skills, which will underpin and be woven through your approach to (2) educational ethics and their relation to your professional identity as a teacher, as well as inform your understanding of (3) key contemporary issues in the philosophy of education, and the practical implications that flow from these. You will explore key ideas by engaging critically with lectures on philosophical theory, critical reflection, close reading of relevant material, ethical reasoning, tutorial and peer discussion, and your assessment tasks.

Ethics, Education and Professional Practice

Internship/PlacementThe second Professional Experience (PE2) provides pre-service teachers the opportunity to become familiar with the school context. PE2 primarily involves active observation, discussions with the supervising teacher and initial school experiences. Throughout the placement pre-service teachers are required to maintain professional files, which contain observations, policy documents, teaching resources and personal reflections on their own experience. Professional Experience 2 (Primary)

This subject explores the complex relationship between language and culture, and considers both in terms of linguistic and cultural diversity. The subject applies understandings of each to the teaching and learning of language. An emphasis is placed on understanding &#39;culture&#39; from a range of critical perspectives, and to explore the way in which intercultural communication is at play in English language learning and teaching. Issues of identity, the emergence of &#39;world Englishes&#39;, and the contribution of critical sociolinguistics are considered in relation to the practice of English language learning and teaching

Language, Culture and Diversity

The subject aims to promote awareness of the importance of Health and Physical Education (HPE) in the curriculum from a generalist teacher&#39;s perspective, and provide confidence in teaching its concepts at a primary school level. It seeks to prepare primary school pre-service teachers to teach generalist level physical education and other physical activities to primary school children. It also aims to prepare primary school pre-service teachers to teach health education and health promotion to children, parents, staff and the wider school community whilst giving pre-service teachers knowledge of and developing their capacity to discuss and analyse contemporary aspects of health and wellbeing; as well as an ability to work with others who may have health and well-being issues. Evidence-based sources will be used to develop knowledge of the physical, social, emotional, spiritual and interpersonal dimensions and will be applied to a range of topics covered in the health and physical education curriculum, for example: drugs, resilience, nutrition and safety issues. The interpersonal skills of communication and conflict resolution will also be developed. National, state and local perspectives relating to the focus, structure and content of HPE will also be critically examined.Skills that are emphasised in this subject are those that have been identified by the Teachers Registration Board (TRB), the ACARA HPE curriculum, as well as national teaching bodies, as important by the time you graduate with your teaching degree. These include demonstrating aspects of professional knowledge, professional relationships and professional practice.

Personal Development & HPE

This subject provides an introduction to working with the Arts in educational contexts. In this subject you will develop an understanding of the distinctive value of Arts education, particularly the opportunities that it provides to deliver integrated and creative early childhood and primary learning experiences. By the end of this subject, you will be better able to articulate the value of the Arts in education; engage with the essential elements and processes of each of the five art forms (dance, drama, media arts, music and visual art); apply the Arts organising strands of making and responding across the art form areas; and understand the critical role of the teacher in initiating quality arts education in and across a school curriculum.

Introduction to Arts Education

Students are enabled to constructively consider the interface of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous issues, histories, cultures and perspectives in education, the curriculum and the ‘hidden curriculum’. The subject has four foci which are integrated: identity/ nationalism, history, ethics and pedagogy. It considers these foci as they relate to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and non-Indigenous students, cultural engagement and racism in education and in Australian society. The subject enables students to develop an ethical position and critical reflection to recognise that cultural engagement in any classroom is contingent on the teacher’s awareness of his/her own cultural positioning; and the process and pedagogy enables students to identify and challenge institutional political, racial and social injustices in education. The subject enables students to own a position from which to be confident and capable to teach the interface of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous histories and perspectives since colonisation and to teach Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous students with cultural insight and respect. The subject fosters deep thinking and engagement with ethical issues that are vital to being an effective and transformative teacher capable of fostering restorative justice and reconciliation.

Professional Experience 3 (Primary)

Children encounter a wide range of texts in their lives. They are expected to read and interpret these texts, and to create their own. An emphasis of study in this subject will be on notions of socio-cultural contexts and their impact on the ways different text types or genres construct meanings; the manner in which texts vary with respect to field, tenor and mode, the features of written texts, and the teaching of text types and grammar.  The subject will also involve the investigation of children’s literature, with a deep study of picture books, the most prevalent literary form found in K-6 classrooms.
