Primary Mathematics 1: Numeracy

International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme

This subject builds on the knowledge of pedagogies appropriate for teaching primary mathematics that students acquired in EMT521 Teaching Primary Mathematics 1. The second subject in the sequence, EMT620 broadens students understanding of mathematics pedagogy by addressing the content and practices not covered in the initial subject. This subject will model and provide opportunities for students to engage with best pedagogical practice by undertaking rich tasks, group work, and problem solving, as well as differentiating and integrating the curriculum. Students will enhance their understanding of appropriate pedagogies for teaching mathematics and their knowledge of relevant curricula, the development of students&#39; thinking in each of the strands of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics, and the relationship of content knowledge to pedagogy. It will provide pre-service teachers with opportunities to assess primary students&#39; mathematical thinking using work samples and to develop their skills in planning for teaching based on this information.

Teaching Primary Mathematics 2

The second Professional Experience placement (PE2) provides pre-service teachers the opportunity to build on their understanding of the school context and to begin to apply their theoretical understanding of teaching in practice. PE2 begins with active observation and is characterised by increasing engagement in teaching and learning activities.This placement is undertaken in Semester 2 only, in accordance with the <a href="https://www.utas.edu.au/education/professional-experience/calendar" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(215, 29, 13);">Professional Experience Calendar.</a> All students must be aware of the scheduled Professional Experience dates and be prepared to undertake a placement during the scheduled time. The dates of Professional Experience may only be changed in exceptional, unplanned circumstances. Date variations are assessed on a case-by-case basis by the Coordinator, Professional Experience in accordance with the <a href="https://www.utas.edu.au/education/professional-experience/procedural-guidelines" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(215, 29, 13);">Professional Experience Guidelines.</a> Variations can be submitted via the <a href="https://www.utas.edu.au/education/professional-experience/variation-request" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(215, 29, 13);">Variation Request Form</a>.

Professional Experience 2 (Primary)

The subject aims to promote awareness of the importance of Health and Physical Education (HPE) in the curriculum from a generalist teacher&#39;s perspective, and provide confidence in teaching its concepts at a primary school level. It seeks to prepare primary school pre-service teachers to teach generalist level physical education and other physical activities to primary school children. It also aims to prepare primary school pre-service teachers to teach health education and health promotion to children, parents, staff and the wider school community whilst giving pre-service teachers knowledge of and developing their capacity to discuss and analyse contemporary aspects of health and wellbeing; as well as an ability to work with others who may have health and well-being issues. Evidence-based sources will be used to develop knowledge of the physical, social, emotional, spiritual and interpersonal dimensions and will be applied to a range of topics covered in the health and physical education curriculum, for example: drugs, resilience, nutrition and safety issues. The interpersonal skills of communication and conflict resolution will also be developed. National, state and local perspectives relating to the focus, structure and content of HPE will also be critically examined.Skills that are emphasised in this subject are those that have been identified by the Teachers Registration Board (TRB), the ACARA HPE curriculum, as well as national teaching bodies, as important by the time you graduate with your teaching degree. These include demonstrating aspects of professional knowledge, professional relationships and professional practice.

Personal Development & HPE

The third Professional Experience placement (PE3) provides students with the opportunity to increase their familiarity with the school context, and to further develop their understanding of teaching practice in relation to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. PE3 begins with active observation and is characterised by increasing engagement in teaching and learning activities, building upon students’ first and second Professional Experience placements. There is an expectation that by the end of PE3, students should demonstrate the capacity to assume responsibility for approximately 80% of a full-time teaching load.This placement is undertaken in in accordance with the <a href="https://www.utas.edu.au/education/professional-experience/calendar" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(215, 29, 13);">Professional Experience Calendar</a>. All students must be aware of the scheduled Professional Experience dates and be prepared to undertake a placement during the scheduled time. The dates of Professional Experience may only be changed in exceptional, unplanned circumstances. Professional Experience 3 (Primary)

Children encounter a wide range of texts in their lives. They are expected to read and interpret these texts, and to create their own. An emphasis of study in this subject will be on notions of socio-cultural contexts and their impact on the ways different text types or genres construct meanings; the manner in which texts vary with respect to field, tenor and mode, the features of written texts, and the teaching of text types and grammar.  The subject will also involve the investigation of children’s literature, with a deep study of picture books, the most prevalent literary form found in K-6 classrooms.

Primary English Curriculum and Pedagogy

This subject introduces you to the Australian Curriculum: Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) in the primary school context, with a focus on how to effectively teach its content to students. You will explore key HASS pedagogies, such as using historical sources and conducting geographical fieldwork, alongside strategies for explicitly teaching content knowledge and skills. Through planning learning experiences and developing teaching resources aligned with the curriculum, you will build confidence in designing meaningful HASS lessons. The subject also deepens your understanding of research-informed best practices in HASS education, while further developing your research and communication skills.

Primary Humanities and Social Sciences Education

In this subject you will learn how the Australian Curriculum: Science describes the ultimate goal of science education as being the development of scientific literacy. Science is not simply a body of knowledge but should also be understood as a process of inquiry and a human endeavour. You will engage with scientific understanding about the natural world and learn how science can be taught to primary students in a meaningful way that develops their curiosity and inquiry skills. The relationship between science and technology will also be explored through hands-on activities and readings.

Primary Science & Technology Education

This subject introduces students to pedagogies appropriate for teaching primary mathematics and contributes to your evidence for meeting Graduate Teaching Standards. The subject will model and provide opportunities for students to engage with rich tasks, group work, problem solving, and differentiating the curriculum using examples from the number domain of the Australian Curriculum. Students will develop their understanding of appropriate pedagogies for teaching mathematics and their knowledge of relevant curricula, the development of students&#39; thinking in number, and the relationship of content knowledge to pedagogy. It will provide pre-service teachers with opportunities to deepen their own mathematical content knowledge within the domain of number, assess primary students&#39; mathematical thinking using work samples and to plan lessons in mathematic.

Teaching Primary Mathematics 1

The first Professional Experience (PE1) provides pre-service teachers the opportunity to become familiar with the school context. PE1 primarily involves active observation, discussions with the supervising teacher and initial school experiences.This placement is undertaken in Semester 1 only, in accordance with the <a href="https://www.utas.edu.au/education/professional-experience/calendar" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(215, 29, 13);">Professional Experience Calendar.</a> All students must be aware of the scheduled Professional Experience dates and be prepared to undertake a placement during the scheduled time. Professional Experience 1 (Primary)

This subject has a focus on contemporary approaches to the teaching of reading, including close attention to the teaching of phonemic awareness, phonics, word knowledge, and vocabulary instruction and reading comprehension of a wide range of texts. An emphasis of study will also be on teaching children writing, with a close study of text types and grammar. Throughout the subject there is also a strong focus on the pedagogical imperatives underpinning the English curriculum including explicit teaching, assessing student learning progress and catering for diverse learners. You will learn to apply this knowledge by developing a portfolio of lesson plans in reading and writing.
