Primary Mathematics 1: Numeracy

International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme

This subject builds on the knowledge of pedagogies appropriate for teaching primary mathematics that students acquired in EMT521 Teaching Primary Mathematics 1. The second subject in the sequence, EMT620 broadens students understanding of mathematics pedagogy by addressing the content and practices not covered in the initial subject. This subject will model and provide opportunities for students to engage with best pedagogical practice by undertaking rich tasks, group work, and problem solving, as well as differentiating and integrating the curriculum. Students will enhance their understanding of appropriate pedagogies for teaching mathematics and their knowledge of relevant curricula, the development of students&#39; thinking in each of the strands of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics, and the relationship of content knowledge to pedagogy. It will provide pre-service teachers with opportunities to assess primary students&#39; mathematical thinking using work samples and to develop their skills in planning for teaching based on this information.

Teaching Primary Mathematics 2

Internship/PlacementThe second Professional Experience (PE2) provides pre-service teachers the opportunity to become familiar with the school context. PE2 primarily involves active observation, discussions with the supervising teacher and initial school experiences. Throughout the placement pre-service teachers are required to maintain professional files, which contain observations, policy documents, teaching resources and personal reflections on their own experience. Professional Experience 2 (Primary)

The subject aims to promote awareness of the importance of Health and Physical Education (HPE) in the curriculum from a generalist teacher&#39;s perspective, and provide confidence in teaching its concepts at a primary school level. It seeks to prepare primary school pre-service teachers to teach generalist level physical education and other physical activities to primary school children. It also aims to prepare primary school pre-service teachers to teach health education and health promotion to children, parents, staff and the wider school community whilst giving pre-service teachers knowledge of and developing their capacity to discuss and analyse contemporary aspects of health and wellbeing; as well as an ability to work with others who may have health and well-being issues. Evidence-based sources will be used to develop knowledge of the physical, social, emotional, spiritual and interpersonal dimensions and will be applied to a range of topics covered in the health and physical education curriculum, for example: drugs, resilience, nutrition and safety issues. The interpersonal skills of communication and conflict resolution will also be developed. National, state and local perspectives relating to the focus, structure and content of HPE will also be critically examined.Skills that are emphasised in this subject are those that have been identified by the Teachers Registration Board (TRB), the ACARA HPE curriculum, as well as national teaching bodies, as important by the time you graduate with your teaching degree. These include demonstrating aspects of professional knowledge, professional relationships and professional practice.

Professional Experience 3 (Primary)

Children encounter a wide range of texts in their lives. They are expected to read and interpret these texts, and to create their own. An emphasis of study in this subject will be on notions of socio-cultural contexts and their impact on the ways different text types or genres construct meanings; the manner in which texts vary with respect to field, tenor and mode, the features of written texts, and the teaching of text types and grammar.  The subject will also involve the investigation of children’s literature, with a deep study of picture books, the most prevalent literary form found in K-6 classrooms.

Primary English Curriculum and Pedagogy

This subject is designed to provide students with an understanding of the subject disciplines, History and Geography, in the primary school. Students will learn about key aspects of historical and geographical knowledge and understanding and skills and how such knowledge can be transformed into classroom practice. Emphasis will be given to learning about and applying Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) skills and to developing understanding of the importance of fieldwork in History and Geography. There will be a brief examination of two of the Australian Curriculum Cross-Curriculum perspectives, Asia and Australia&#39;s engagement with Asia, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders&#39; histories and cultures. Students will gain an understanding of how to adapt existing curriculum documents to specific teaching contexts. Students will design teaching and learning activities and experience a variety of teacher- and student-centred teaching and learning strategies, and the development of shared resources for History and Geography teaching. Students will improve their research skills and knowledge of available teaching and learning resources, and evaluate their age appropriateness for the classroom.

Primary Humanities and Social Sciences Education

In this subject you will learn how the Australian Curriculum: Science describes the ultimate goal of science education as being the development of scientific literacy. Science is not simply a body of knowledge but should also be understood as a process of inquiry and a human endeavour. You will engage with scientific understanding about the natural world and learn how science can be taught to primary students in a meaningful way that develops their curiosity and inquiry skills. The relationship between science and technology will also be explored through hands-on activities and readings.

Primary Science & Technology Education

This subject introduces students to pedagogies appropriate for teaching primary mathematics and contributes to your evidence for meeting Graduate Teaching Standards . The subject will model and provide opportunities for students to engage with rich tasks, group work, problem solving, and differentiating the curriculum using examples from the number domain of the Australian Curriculum. Students will develop their understanding of appropriate pedagogies for teaching mathematics and their knowledge of relevant curricula, the development of students&#39; thinking in number, and the relationship of content knowledge to pedagogy. It will provide pre-service teachers with opportunities to deepen their own mathematical content knowledge within the domain of number, assess primary students&#39; mathematical thinking using work samples and to evaluate teaching resources.

Professional Experience 1 (Primary)

Foundations of English is designed to provoke your curiosity about how language works, ignite your passion for English, and introduce you to the discipline of English as it is articulated in the three strands of the Australian Curriculum English: Language, Literacy, and Literature. This subject explores the ways in which children learn to speak, read, write and communicate in a range of contexts. It has a particular focus on contemporary approaches to the teaching of reading, including close attention to the teaching of phonemic awareness, phonics, word knowledge, and comprehension of a wide range of texts. You will be involved in analysing children&#39;s language use (oral language, reading fluency, writing), and in using specific outcomes from the curriculum to plan explicit teaching experiences for language and literacy learning.
