In this subject you will learn about Music and the Visual Arts as key areas of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and the Australian Curriculum: The Arts. You will become familiar with the research that supports the practice of the Arts in education and apply this to your planning, teaching and reflection. You will experiment with, reflect on and apply the elements of Music and Visual Arts to Early Childhood and Primary contexts and to key Australian curriculum documents. As a culminating performance of your learning you will plan, teach and reflect on a short Music or Visual Arts teaching session.

This subject extends your understanding of the emotional, intellectual, spiritual, interpersonal, social and environmental dimensions of health and wellness. The content focuses on critical aspects of social and emotional learning (SEL) to ensure you can successfully implement a program of SEL in a school or workplace. SEL encompasses concepts such as resilience, mental health, drug education, sexual health, relationships and safety issues. You will develop skills and knowledge to enable you to support the social and emotional wellbeing of your students in your teaching practice.

The importance of play is recognised as being integral to young childrens learning and development and is therefore, embedded within the Early Years Learning Framework. This subject comprises of three modules, namely: What is play? Play and the curriculum; and Play and the early childhood (EC) practitioner. The concept, assessment and integration of play based learning will be investigated through readings, lectures and tutorial activities. This subject is particularly relevant to students specialising in the early years, and those seeking an early childhood perspective of pedagogy and childrens learning.

This subject builds on the knowledge of pedagogies appropriate for teaching primary mathematics that students acquired in EMT521 Teaching Primary Mathematics 1. The second subject in the sequence, EMT620 broadens students understanding of mathematics pedagogy by addressing the content and practices not covered in the initial subject. This subject will model and provide opportunities for students to engage with best pedagogical practice by undertaking rich tasks, group work, and problem solving, as well as differentiating and integrating the curriculum. Students will enhance their understanding of appropriate pedagogies for teaching mathematics and their knowledge of relevant curricula, the development of students&#39; thinking in each of the strands of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics, and the relationship of content knowledge to pedagogy. It will provide pre-service teachers with opportunities to assess primary students&#39; mathematical thinking using work samples and to develop their skills in planning for teaching based on this information.

Teaching Primary Mathematics 2

The subject will explore the nature of inclusive education in the 21st century with an emphasis on diversity and exceptionality. Based on a philosophical foundation that values every student and acknowledges the right of every student to the most appropriate educational opportunities, this subject involves independently researching and analysing the complex theoretical and practical issues associated with effective inclusive education. You will be required to develop an advanced and integrated understanding of learning and teaching approaches to suit the diverse educational needs of students. You will build on your understanding of theories of human development and learning in relation to student diversity and exceptionality, applying planning models to include all students.

This subject is a theoretical and practical exploration of ethics in relation to education and teacher identity. It encourages you to consider how particular philosophical ideas inform educational values, how they relate to your identity as a teacher, and how they might be articulated in your own teaching practice. You will think critically and creatively about these ideas and evaluate their impact on educational practices, including those explored in previous and subsequent subjects. The subjects rationale is that your teaching practice is strongly informed by your ethical stance on education, children, and professionalism, and the practical implications that flow from this, taking into account key professional and legislative imperatives. The subject focuses on three integrated areas: (1) the development of critical reasoning skills, which will underpin and be woven through your approach to (2) educational ethics and their relation to your professional identity as a teacher, as well as inform your understanding of (3) key contemporary issues in the philosophy of education, and the practical implications that flow from these. You will explore key ideas by engaging critically with lectures on philosophical theory, critical reflection, close reading of relevant material, ethical reasoning, tutorial and peer discussion, and your assessment tasks.

Ethics, Education and Professional Practice

Internship/PlacementThe first Professional Experience (PE2) provides pre-service teachers the opportunity to become familiar with the school context. PE2 primarily involves active observation, discussions with the supervising teacher and initial school experiences.

Professional Experience 2 (Primary)

This subject introduces concepts and theories that deepen and broaden your understanding of the professional activity undertaken by education support workers in the classroom. It discusses the practical skills required in work contexts and provides opportunities to critically examine the nature of support for student learning and development. You will develop practical skills in reflection and observation by engaging in tutorials, lectures and on-line activities. This engagement in the activities of the subject will assist you in completing your assessment tasks.

This introductory subject prepares educators from a variety of disciplines to meet the maturational needs of diverse learners by providing a foundational base of knowledge regarding physical and cognitive development from conception through adulthood, with an emphasis on early childhood and childhood. Teaching all children the benefits of lifelong physical activity participation through the use of developmentally appropriate assessment and programming strategies is the primary focus of this subject.

This subject explores linguistics as an academic discipline and in particular its relevance to language learning and teaching. A central idea underpinning the subject is the role that language awareness plays in preparing language teachers to teach English to speakers of other languages.
